UIF Committed to Resolving LAP Stipend Delays Promptly

The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) is taking decisive action to address delays in stipend payments for participants in the Labour Activation Programme (LAP), which have been attributed to administrative discrepancies and attempts at fraud by some partnering companies. A recent review conducted by the UIF has identified opportunities for improving administrative accuracy, prompting the organization to enhance its review processes for invoices and attendance records submitted by these partners. This proactive approach is expected to lead to more reliable and timely distribution of stipends to beneficiaries.

In addition to strengthening its review processes, the UIF is streamlining stipend payments by implementing an electronic payment system and hiring short-term contractors to assist with invoice processing. Internal resources have also been reallocated to provide additional support to the Labour Activation Programme. The UIF is committed to closely investigating any discrepancies and will take necessary action against any partnering companies suspected of engaging in unscrupulous practices.

Acting Director General Jacky Molisane has assured beneficiaries that a sufficient budget has been allocated for stipend payments for employability programmes in the current financial year. She emphasized that stipends will be disbursed in accordance with established procedures, reinforcing the Department's commitment to ensuring that all qualifying beneficiaries receive their payments promptly and efficiently.

Ms. Molisane also cautioned beneficiaries against resorting to violence or vandalism as a means of expressing their concerns, as such actions could have serious repercussions and hinder their integration into the labour activation programme and the broader job market. The Department is dedicated to adhering strictly to the processes of the Labour Activation Programme and reserves the right to take legal action against any party that undermines or contravenes established protocols as outlined in existing agreements.

Participants and stakeholders are reminded that the programme must remain impartial and free from external influence. Efforts to involve individuals who do not meet eligibility criteria compromise the integrity of the process and should be avoided to ensure that the programme's objectives are achieved without undue pressure.

Swift Police Action Leads to Arrest of Two Suspects in Fatal Shooting of Elderly Couple in Rustenburg

Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the tragic shooting of an elderly couple at a Rustenburg shopping mall on Saturday, June 14. The arrests follow a coordinated operation led by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the North West Province.

According to Colonel Adele Myburgh, spokesperson for the North West Provincial SAPS, the suspects, aged 29 and 41, were apprehended through an integrated effort involving Rustenburg Detectives, Crime Intelligence, Rustenburg and Boitekong Visible Policing, the Phokeng K9 Unit, and the District Trio Task Team. The successful operation also led to the recovery of the vehicle used in the crime as well as a firearm believed to be linked to the murders.

“The arrest of these individuals is a result of outstanding teamwork, relentless investigative work, and the efficient use of crime intelligence to track and locate the suspects,” Colonel Myburgh stated.

The vehicle, a Kia Rio, was tracked to Ndamoyi in Boitekong. Upon questioning, one of the suspects admitted to driving the car on the day of the shooting and identified his accomplice as the alleged shooter. He then led officers to a residence in Rustenburg East, where the second suspect was found and a pistol was recovered.

Both men are expected to appear in the Rustenburg Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, June 19, facing two counts of murder.

Acting Provincial Commissioner of the North West, Major General Patrick Asaneng, praised the swift and coordinated response by SAPS members across various units.

“These swift arrests should send a strong message to those who commit crime that the police in the province will relentlessly track them down and that they will have no place to hide,” said Major General Asaneng. “The SAPS remains committed to ensuring justice is served, particularly in cases that so deeply affect our communities.”

Acting District Commissioner of Bojanala Platinum Sub-District 2, Brigadier Mamotsamai Ntoagae, also received commendation for her leadership during the operation.

In the early hours of Wednesday morning 18 July 2025, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers successfully rescued a woman who had been kidnapped, following swift action on the N1 South highway.

At approximately 4:00 AM, officers patrolling near 14th Avenue noticed a silver-grey Hyundai driving without its headlights on. As they approached the vehicle to alert the driver, a woman inside the car screamed for help through an open window, claiming she was being kidnapped.

The officers immediately activated their emergency lights and sirens. In response, the driver of the Hyundai attempted to flee, initiating a high-speed chase. The suspect exited the highway at Gordon Road and was cornered on 6th Street in De La Ray, where he abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.

According to JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla, the officers responded without hesitation and called for backup as they secured the scene and rescued the victim. “The woman confirmed to officers that she had been kidnapped from her workplace in Midrand, where she was on night shift. The suspect is believed to be her ex-boyfriend,” Fihla said.

A case of kidnapping has been opened at Florida SAPS, and the vehicle used in the incident has been impounded for investigation.

Superintendent Fihla praised the officers involved in the rescue. “Their alertness and prompt response led to the safe recovery of the victim. This kind of dedication reflects the JMPD’s firm stance against crime and our ongoing commitment to protecting the residents of Johannesburg,” he stated.

The suspect remains at large and investigations into the matter are ongoing.

SAPS Warns Impersonator Khosi Thomson: "Stop Posing as a Police Officer"

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has issued a stern warning to a woman identified as Khosi Thomson, a foreign national, who has falsely portrayed herself as a police officer on social media.

Thomson, active on Facebook, has uploaded several photos of herself wearing what appears to be police uniform and has claimed affiliation with the Johannesburg Central Police Station. Following a preliminary investigation, the SAPS confirmed that she is not a member of the service and is, in fact, a civilian. Furthermore, the attire she is seen wearing is not part of the official SAPS-issued uniform.

SAPS national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe commented, “The public must be aware that Khosi Thomson is not and has never been employed by the South African Police Service. Her actions constitute a serious offense, and we will not tolerate the impersonation of our officers.”

The SAPS social media team reached out to Thomson, warning her to immediately stop the illegal activity. Shortly thereafter, she locked her Facebook profile.

“Our Crime Intelligence Unit is actively working to locate her, and a full investigation is underway,” Brigadier Mathe confirmed. “Impersonating a police officer undermines the credibility and trust of law enforcement, and we will ensure accountability.”

The SAPS has reminded the public that it is a criminal offense to falsely represent oneself as a member of the police service or to wear SAPS uniforms, badges, or decorations without proper authorization. Offenders may face fines and imprisonment.

Police in Gauteng have initiated a murder investigation following a tragic shooting incident in Eldorado Park on the evening of Saturday, June 14, 2025. The shooting occurred around 21:00 in Extension 1, where it is reported that a white Audi, occupied by three male individuals, opened fire on a group of nine young men gathered outside a local mosque.

Three victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while a fourth individual was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. The identities of the deceased have not yet been disclosed, and the motive for the shooting remains under investigation.

Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS) Gauteng, confirmed the incident and stated that police are diligently working to apprehend the suspects involved.

“We are investigating three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. We encourage anyone who may have witnessed the incident or possesses information that could aid the investigation to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or report anonymously via the MySAPSApp,” Captain Sibeko urged.

Earlier that evening, at approximately 19:45, members of the Gauteng Anti-Gang Unit conducted a series of arrests in Newclare and Eldorado Park during routine patrols.

In Newclare, officers stopped and searched a 21-year-old man at the intersection of Dowling and Hamilton Avenue. The suspect was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm with its serial number removed. As officers attempted to detain him, his parents, aged 46 and 48, allegedly intervened, attempting to pull him away from police custody. The situation escalated when community members began throwing stones at police vehicles.

In response, police called for backup and discharged a warning shot to disperse the crowd. The 21-year-old suspect was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm, while his parents were taken into custody for malicious damage to property and obstructing police duties.

In a separate incident later that night, the Anti-Gang Unit apprehended a 43-year-old man in Eldorado Park Extension 1 for possession of a stolen motor vehicle. Officers on patrol observed a silver Ford Figo, which had been reported stolen at Mondeor SAPS. When police signaled for the vehicle to stop, the occupants attempted to flee, resulting in a high-speed chase during which suspects fired upon the pursuing officers.

One suspect was apprehended, while two others managed to escape. Efforts to locate them are ongoing.

“All four arrested suspects will appear in the Magistrate’s Court in due course,” stated Captain Sibeko. “We remain committed to intensifying operations aimed at combating illegal firearms, stolen vehicles, and gang-related activities in these areas.”

Investigations into both cases are ongoing.

Rising Stars on the Court: Vaishali Ramnath and Chloesha Shadyne Dullabh Share Their Volleyball Journeys

Volleyball transcends being just a sport — it’s a journey of growth, resilience, and passion for many young athletes. For both 15-year-old Vaishali Ramnath and Chloesha Shadyne Dullabh from Lenasia , their experiences on the court symbolize more than wins and losses; they embody discipline, community spirit, and the vibrant energy of youth. As we celebrate Youth Month, their stories remind us of sport’s power to shape young lives.

Vaishali Ramnath: Fueled by Passion, Grounded in Discipline

Vaishali Ramnath started playing volleyball in 2020 at age 10. What began as simple curiosity soon blossomed into a genuine passion. “I just wanted to try something new,” she shares, “but it quickly became a part of who I am.”

Her talent and dedication caught attention early. In 2022, she was selected to play at Lenasia School Sports and later showcased her skills at SBSM’s VPL. In early 2023, her volleyball journey took a new direction when her father, along with Derek, Damien, and Rocko — all local volleyball enthusiasts — founded the Lenasia Volleyball Academy, providing a structured environment for her training and growth.

By February 2024, Vaishali joined KAD Volleyball Club, stepping into competitive play. She now plays as a libero for the first division team in the Johannesburg Volleyball Union (JVU).

Her journey hasn't been without challenges. “Playing against more experienced players is tough,” she admits. “But it pushes me to improve faster and stay mentally tough.” Balancing school and training remains a continuous effort, but her unwavering determination keeps her moving forward.

Vaishali credits her motivation to her coaches and parents. “My coaches inspire me — their work ethic is incredible,” she says. “My parents motivate me daily to be my best.”

Her role model, local coach Sita Taryn Singh, energizes her with dedication and commitment. Internationally, she admires Brenda Castillo — one of the world’s top liberos — for her relentless defense and pride in representing her country.

“What drives me most is growth,” Vaishali shares. “Being part of something bigger than myself keeps me inspired.”

Chloesha Shadyne Dullabh: Driven by Joy and Determination

Chloesha Shadyne Dullabh’s volleyball journey started in grade 4, just before the world faced lockdown. “The rhythm of the game drew me in,” she recalls. From knowing nothing about digging or volleying, she steadily improved after joining her school’s team.

“I used to rush through homework just to get to training,” she laughs. Volleyball brought her joy and adrenaline, whether spiking or digging powerful hits from opponents.

Now 15 and playing for KAD Volleyball Club, Chloesha appreciates her coaches’ guidance. “They motivate me to never give up, always try my best, and most importantly, have fun.”

She openly acknowledges her challenges, like staying focused during matches. “Distractions cause mistakes, but I’m learning to grow from them,” she explains.

Her biggest inspiration is Melissa Teresa Vargas Abreu — an international volleyball star known for her strength and presence on the court. “She pushes me to become as good as I can be,” Chloesha states.

For her, volleyball is more than just a game; it teaches humility, teamwork, and happiness. “It disciplines you and brings joy,” she reflects.

As Youth Month approaches, Chloesha emphasizes its importance. “It’s a special time to celebrate our energy and creativity both on and off the court.”

Celebrating Young Volleyball Talent

Vaishali and Chloesha exemplify the future of South African volleyball — passionate, resilient, and community-oriented. Their stories highlight the importance of opportunity, mentorship, and a genuine love for the game.

As they continue to grow and inspire their peers, their message is clear: Stay focused, stay humble, and always give your best.
