An intensive law enforcement operation, Operation Shanela Two, was conducted across Gauteng over the past weekend, resulting in the arrest of 83 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol. In addition to these arrests, over 800 suspects were apprehended for various crimes across the province from Friday, June 27 to Sunday, June 29, 2025.
Led by Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Mbuso Khumalo, the operation targeted high-crime areas in Honeydew and Cosmo City, where 74 individuals were arrested. During the operation, unlicensed liquor outlets—often linked to violent crimes such as murder, assault, and rape—were also shut down.
In parallel, similar operations in the Ekurhuleni, Tshwane, Sedibeng, and West Rand Districts resulted in the arrest of 158 additional suspects.
As part of the operation’s ongoing efforts, detectives focused on apprehending fugitives wanted for serious crimes including car hijacking, business robbery, house robbery, murder, and rape. A total of 723 of these suspects were successfully located and arrested.
Major General Khumalo expressed concern over the continued prevalence of drunk driving in the province, emphasizing the need for greater accountability among motorists.
“These arrests should serve as a strong deterrent to those who choose to drive under the influence,” he stated.
The arrested individuals will face charges and will appear before various Magistrate Courts in the coming days.
