Operation Shanela Nets Nearly 14,000 Suspects

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has reported a significant breakthrough in its efforts to combat crime, with 13,915 suspects arrested this past week through the nationwide Operation Shanela.

A concerning number of these arrests, 190, were related to rape, with KwaZulu-Natal province recording the highest number at 89. SAPS emphasized its commitment to addressing gender-based violence, femicide (GBVF), and sexual offenses.

In addition, the task team deployed in Emanguzi successfully disrupted cross-border criminal activities, arresting four suspects and recovering 19 stolen vehicles, including a mix of bakkies, SUVs, a minibus, and a sedan.

SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Van Wyk stated that the team acted on intelligence regarding stolen vehicles destined for the Kosi Bay border, intercepting them on the N2 to R22. While four suspects were apprehended, others managed to escape. One of the recovered vehicles was found to have fraudulent documentation intended to facilitate its illegal border crossing.

Key arrests made during Operation Shanela (June 2 - June 8, 2024) include:

* Firearms: 93 for illegal possession (Western Cape: 31)
* Drugs: 196 for illegal dealing (Western Cape: 69), 2041 for possession (Western Cape: 796)
* Liquor: 572 for illegal dealing (KZN: 295)
* Driving: 428 for driving under the influence (Gauteng: 169)
* Other: 55 for murder, 73 for illegal mining

Confiscated and Recovered Items:

* Stolen/hijacked vehicles: 82
* Illegal firearms: 99
* Ammunition: 1,364 rounds
