The MMC for Public Safety in the City of Johannesburg, Councillor Dr. Mgcini Tshwaku, has issued a warning to residents to prepare for an approaching cold front expected to impact the city. Temperatures are predicted to drop to lows of approximately 10°C, with daytime highs reaching only 18°C, and there is even a possibility of snow in certain areas.
Councillor Tshwaku underscores the importance of adopting responsible heating practices to ensure community safety during this cold spell. Residents are advised to:
- Use heating appliances responsibly, ensuring they are turned off when unattended to prevent fire hazards.
- Maintain proper ventilation when using braziers or similar heating devices to mitigate the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Dress in layers to adequately protect extremities such as hands, feet, and head from the cold.
- Pay special attention to vulnerable groups, including the elderly and children, who are more susceptible to cold-related health issues.
Johannesburg Emergency Services (EMS) are on high alert and prepared to respond swiftly to incidents related to heating device malfunctions, structural fires, and carbon monoxide poisoning. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious fires or unsafe heating practices immediately.
According to COJ EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi, “It’s extremely cold across most parts of Johannesburg. Residents are urged to exercise caution when using heating devices such as heaters, paraffin stoves, braziers, or imbaula. Never leave these devices unattended while in use, as this significantly reduces the risk of fire incidents.”
Mulaudzi further explained that EMS teams are monitoring all seven regions of the city, with particular focus on vulnerable communities and informal settlements, to ensure rapid response to emergencies stemming from the severe cold.
By adhering to these safety precautions, residents can protect themselves and their families during this challenging weather period.
