The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport has announced that construction on the Golden Highway (R553) has resumed after a temporary suspension caused by protests from local small and medium enterprises (SMMEs). The protests highlighted concerns over the project's procurement and employment practices, which stakeholders felt were not sufficiently inclusive.
Main contractor LoneRock Construction engaged in dialogue with affected parties, leading to the restart of work. MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, reassured the public of the department’s commitment to transparency, fairness, and inclusive economic growth. She urged community members to use formal channels to voice concerns and condemned unlawful conduct that hampers progress.
Despite delays, the department remains committed to completing the project within budget and timeline. A review of procurement and employment practices is underway to ensure compliance with legislation, with corrective measures planned if necessary. The department emphasizes its dedication to empowerment, fairness, and social justice.
