Lenasia’s Legacy Illuminated: A Gala Dinner Honouring 70 Years of Educational Excellence

On the evening of 25 October 2025, the Alpha Primary School Hall in Lenasia was transformed into a vibrant celebration of history, heritage and hope. More than 200 educators gathered for the Lenz Teachers’ Gala Dinner, an event hosted in collaboration with Lenz70 to commemorate seventy years of educational excellence in the region. Far more than a reunion, the evening served as a heartfelt tribute to the generations of teachers, learners and community leaders who have shaped Lenasia’s educational journey.

Prior to the formal proceedings, guests were invited to explore a nostalgic exhibition of photographs curated by veteran journalist and author Fakir Hassen. Rich in historical depth and emotional resonance, the display offered a visual chronicle of educational milestones, community moments and personal memories. It stood as a poignant reminder of the legacy built by those who came before and the enduring spirit of Lenasia’s schools.

The evening unfolded with a series of performances that reflected the cultural diversity and artistic vibrancy of the community. Guests were treated to captivating presentations by Nirvana Studio, Kashvita Dance Academy, Gordon Jackson, Sundra and Chubby, Robert Abrahams and Vinay Nathoo. Nathoo’s rendition of *Imagine* struck a particularly emotional chord with the audience. A poetic celebration by Haroon Mahomed offered a stirring reflection on Lenasia’s journey, tracing its path from forced removals and resistance to resilience and renewal. His words captured the soul of a community that has endured and thrived.

A symbolic cake-cutting ceremony marked the seventy-year milestone, led by Ismail Vadi of Lenz70, Madam Hawa Munshi, Principal of Lenasia Secondary School, and Mr S Pillay. Their gesture honoured the educators who laid the foundation for Lenasia’s schools and celebrated the enduring spirit of teaching.

The keynote address was delivered by Neeshan Balton, Chief Executive of the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation. His speech was both poignant and provocative, drawing on his personal experiences as a teacher during the turbulent 1980s. Balton shared anecdotes of political activism, classroom raids and his eventual dismissal by the House of Delegates. He highlighted the sacrifices made by educators under apartheid and the ongoing challenges within South Africa’s education system. Praising the resilience of teachers who continue to serve despite systemic obstacles, he emphasised their role in nation-building and fostering inclusivity. Balton also addressed unresolved racial tensions in schools and criticised the absence of anti-racism policies within the Department of Education, calling for meaningful reform and unity.

A moving tribute to educators who have passed on was led by retired educator Lalita Rathinsamy and Natalie Naidoo, Principal of Flamingo Primary School. Their words honoured mentors and colleagues whose legacies continue to shape classrooms and communities. A candle was lit in remembrance, symbolising the enduring light of their contributions. Rathinsamy’s poetic reflection on the life of a teacher brought many to tears, particularly her personal tribute to her father, Mr Narayanaswamy Rathinsamy, a lifelong educator at Nirvana. His motto, “To serve God is to serve humanity,” remains a source of inspiration.

Programme directors Nazim Adam, Principal of Impala Crescent Primary School, and retired educator Claudia Jeevanantham brought warmth and humour to the evening. Their interactive engagement with the audience, including generational quizzes and heartfelt anecdotes, reminded all present that education is as much about relationships as it is about curriculum. Adam noted that the evening was not merely a reunion, but a celebration of education in all its dimensions, acknowledging both its triumphs and its trials.

Madam Hasina Mohammed, Principal of Alpha Primary School, delivered a powerful welcome address. As the leader of Lenasia’s oldest primary school, she reflected on the journey from humble beginnings to centres of excellence. Expressing pride in hosting the event, she extended gratitude to district officials, entertainers, caterers and the organising committee. Her words captured the spirit of the evening: “Our true success is not only measured in buildings or milestones, but in the lives we have touched and the futures we continue to build together.”

Haroon Mahomed’s poem, shared later in the evening, was a masterful ode to Lenasia’s evolution. His verses traced the township’s transformation from displacement and struggle to a thriving, diverse community. He honoured the educators, artists, athletes and activists who shaped Lenasia, celebrating the spirit of resilience that continues to define it. Echoing the voices of Gandhi, Biko and Mandela, his poem reminded all that Lenasia’s legacy is one of courage, creativity and community.

The vote of thanks was delivered by Mr Collin Francis, retired principal of Greyville Primary School, and Fouzia Seedat, a teacher at Harmony Primary School. They acknowledged the tireless efforts of the Local Organising Committee, Alpha Primary School staff, participating schools, entertainers, sponsors and service providers. Special appreciation was extended to Naz Caterers, Jozie Halaal Caterers, Mr Mohamed Moosa, Mr Fahim Bellum, High-Tech Printers, Al-Aqsa School, G-Unit Security, Nirvana Sounds, Gordon Jackson, Vinay Nathoo, Robert Abrahams, ACP, Eastwave, Rising Sun, Lenasia Times, Sundra and Chubby, and Silver Cloud Creations. The photo exhibition curated by Mr Fakir Hassen was especially praised for its nostalgic value, bringing cherished memories to life.

A surprise presentation was made to Agsie Pillay, the event’s lead organiser, whose leadership and humility were celebrated by the organising committee and attendees alike. His vision, patience and tireless efforts were instrumental in the success of the evening, and his example served as an inspiration to all present.

Each school in Lenasia was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation, and all attendees received a commemorative keyring to mark the occasion.

The Lenz Teachers’ Gala Dinner was more than a celebration. It was a reaffirmation of the transformative power of education and its ability to shape lives and communities. It honoured the past, celebrated the present and inspired hope for the future. As candles flickered and memories flowed, one truth stood clear: Lenasia’s educators are the architects of legacy, unity and progress. Their stories, struggles and successes will continue to illuminate the path for generations to come.
