The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has announced that a total of 191 individuals were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol between 26 May and 1 June 2025. These arrests stem from intensified enforcement efforts across the city, including targeted roadblocks, responses to public complaints, and increased routine patrols.
Driving under the influence remains a critical public safety concern, often leading to preventable injuries, fatalities, and legal repercussions. The JMPD remains committed to its zero-tolerance policy on drunk driving as part of its ongoing efforts to safeguard all road users.
"These arrest figures send a strong message: the JMPD will not compromise on road safety," stated Commissioner Patrick Jaca, JMPD Chief of Police. "Driving while intoxicated is illegal, dangerous, and can have devastating consequences. Our officers are dedicated to removing impaired drivers from our roads and ensuring accountability. We urge residents and visitors alike to make responsible choices and never drive under the influence."
The department’s continued success in these operations highlights its commitment to proactive policing and road safety. These efforts emphasize the shared responsibility of all community members in making Johannesburg’s roads safer for everyone.
