In a significant operation, the Gauteng Highway Patrol and Provincial Organised Crime units, in collaboration with the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) K9 Unit, successfully intercepted an illegal alcohol manufacturing operation in Jeppe. The operation was carried out following intelligence reports received by law enforcement authorities on Monday, 30 June 2025
Upon arriving at the premises, officers were confronted by an individual claiming to be the owner of the establishment. The suspect presented a liquor license purportedly issued for an establishment in Mpumalanga province. However, a subsequent search of the property revealed a clandestine distillery involved in the production of whiskey, vodka, and gin.
According to SAPS Gauteng Provincial Police spokesperson, Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, "During the search, the team uncovered evidence of illegal alcohol manufacturing, including counterfeit labels and packaging materials." The operation also seized manufacturing equipment used in the production process.
The total value of the confiscated alcohol, machinery, and unpaid SARS duties is estimated to be approximately R3.5 million. The suspect, identified as the alleged owner, along with five employees, were arrested on-site and taken into custody.
The South African Revenue Service (SARS) Customs Division, along with the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), were called to the scene to take over investigations. Their involvement aims to establish the full extent of the illicit activities and to pursue appropriate legal action against those involved.
Major General Mbuso Khumalo, Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Gauteng, commended the swift response and effective collaboration among various law enforcement agencies. "This operation underscores our commitment to safeguarding the community from the dangers associated with illicit alcohol, which can pose serious health risks to consumers," he stated.
He further urged the public to purchase alcoholic beverages exclusively from licensed and legitimate outlets to ensure safety and compliance with the law.
This successful enforcement action highlights the ongoing efforts by South African authorities to combat alcohol-related crimes and protect public health. Law enforcement officials continue to monitor and dismantle illegal operations to maintain lawful standards within the industry.
