This weekend, athletes nationwide are preparing for the highly anticipated 2025 Comrades Marathon, scheduled for Sunday, June 8, in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal.
A notable contingent of 437 South African Police Service (SAPS) officers will be taking part in this iconic race. The group comprises 66 women and 371 men representing all nine provinces, joining over 22,000 runners in the celebrated "Ultimate Human Race."
SAPS National Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, has expressed full confidence and unwavering support for the officers competing in the 98th edition of the marathon.
The participation of police officers underscores SAPS's dedication to health and wellness, which are vital for fostering a progressive organization through effective human capital development.
“The increasing number of police runners each year reflects a deeply rooted culture of fitness and wellness within the force. Last year, 356 officers participated; this year, that number has risen to 437, with 81 additional officers joining,” stated SAPS national spokesperson Major General Nonkululeko Phokane.
She highlighted that the Comrades Marathon is not only a test of physical endurance but also a celebration of unity, perseverance, and the indomitable human spirit. The participation of police officers in this challenging 89-kilometre race exemplifies their resilience, discipline, and determination.
SAPS management and members extend their best wishes to all police marathon runners for a successful and inspiring “Down Run” from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. Their involvement not only elevates the SAPS flag but also promotes health, wellness, and community support in the ongoing fight against crime.
