The Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Councillor Dada Morero, is set to officially unveil the city’s newly established “Bomb Squad” team during a media briefing today (5 June 2025) at the Soweto Hotel, starting at 11AM. This initiative is a direct follow-up to a commitment made by the Mayor in his May 2025 State of the City Address, representing a bold step toward revitalizing and streamlining municipal operations.
The “Bomb Squad” is a specially designated task force designed to enhance coordination and accelerate service delivery throughout Johannesburg’s administration. While the name traditionally evokes military or police units responsible for diffusing explosive devices, Johannesburg’s “Bomb Squad” takes a metaphorical approach—focusing on identifying and dismantling bureaucratic and systemic barriers that impede the city’s development.
According to the Mayor’s office, this team will serve as a crucial link in aligning strategies across various departments and ensuring the effective implementation of citywide initiatives. Additionally, it will be integrated into the newly announced Johannesburg Presidential Support Working Group (JPSWG), fostering cohesive operations and reducing redundancies in municipal efforts.
“The Bomb Squad will play a transformative role in breaking down the barriers that delay progress and stand in the way of our collective vision for Johannesburg,” Mayor Morero stated.
This initiative is expected to become a cornerstone of the city’s ongoing revitalization efforts, aimed at improving governance, enhancing service delivery, and rebuilding public trust.
