Operation Shanela Delivers Major Crime Prevention Gains in Tshwane

The South African Police Service in Tshwane has demonstrated its strengthened commitment to public safety through a large scale crime prevention initiative under the banner of Operation Shanela. The operation was conducted on Saturday 22 November 2025 in the Eersterust and Silverton policing precincts and formed part of ongoing efforts to curb crime across the district.

Led by the District Commissioner of Tshwane, Major General Samuel Thine, the operation brought together a broad network of enforcement partners. Additional SAPS members from across the district were supported by officials from the Department of Home Affairs, the Department of Correctional Services, the Tshwane Metro Police Department, the Department of Community Safety and Community Policing Forums.

The coordinated operation aimed to strengthen policing visibility, reinforce station level crime fighting initiatives and reduce criminal activity in high priority areas.

Detectives began the weekend with tracing operations on Friday evening that led to the arrest of 249 suspects linked to a range of offences. These included five suspects for murder, three for attempted murder, five for rape and 32 for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. In addition, 76 suspects were arrested for offences related to gender based violence.

On Saturday afternoon, three operational teams were deployed to conduct roadblocks, compliance inspections and visible policing duties. Their efforts resulted in the detention of 38 undocumented foreign nationals who were handed over to immigration authorities for further processing.

Officers searched 360 people and 223 vehicles, verifying six of the vehicles for possible theft. Four motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Patrols were intensified at 24 identified hotspots, leading to the arrest of seven suspects for possession of drugs. Police confiscated Mandrax pipes and several ziplock bags containing suspected narcotics. A further 18 individuals were fined for drinking in public.

Compliance inspections at 24 liquor outlets resulted in the closure of four establishments for contraventions of the Liquor Act. Officers also confiscated a total of 66 860 millilitres of liquor. The Tshwane Metro Police Department issued four AARTO infringement notices amounting to R2 000 during the roadblock operation.

District Commissioner Major General Samuel Thine expressed his appreciation to all participating departments and stakeholders for their coordinated efforts and their continued dedication to building safer communities across Tshwane.
