Body Recovered in Klipvalley River After Intensive Search Effort

A coordinated search by Johannesburg Water Policing and Diving Services has led to the recovery of the body of a man in the Klipvalley River following days of disrupted rescue efforts caused by severe weather conditions.

Divers were deployed on Sunday 16 November 2025 at about 09:00 after a report of a missing person in the Kliptown area. Search operations were initiated immediately, but heavy rainfall across Soweto forced the team to suspend their efforts due to rising water levels and dangerous conditions.

As the water subsided, the search resumed and on 24 October 2025 the body of a man with visible injuries was discovered at the final strainer point in Eldorado Park. Two K9 dogs indicated the location and divers retrieved the deceased. The body was handed over to detectives at the scene for further investigation. An inquest docket has been opened.

Spokesperson for Rapid Response Services in Gauteng, Senior Police Officer Raymond Sambo, commended the commitment of the teams involved. He noted that the search conditions were extremely challenging and emphasised the professionalism and perseverance shown by the divers and K9 units. He added that the recovery offers the first step towards providing answers for the family and ensuring a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police are appealing for information that may assist the investigation. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant details is urged to contact Kliptown SAPS Detectives or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
