The South African Police Service in Tshwane intensified its crime-fighting drive with a high-impact, zero-tolerance sweep in the Ga-Rankuwa policing precinct on Thursday, 20 November 2025. The operation, executed under the banner of Operation Shanela, formed part of the district’s ongoing strategy to curb criminal activity across the metropolitan area.
Led by the District Commissioner of Tshwane, Major-General Samuel Thine, the operation brought together a wide range of enforcement partners. Multiple SAPS units were supported by officials from the Department of Home Affairs, the Tshwane Metro Police Department, the Department of Community Safety, and community policing structures.
The effort began on Wednesday evening when detectives launched an extensive tracing operation targeting known and wanted suspects. Their work resulted in 259 arrests for a range of offences. These included five suspects arrested for murder, four for attempted murder, seven for armed robbery and four for rape, while 86 individuals were apprehended in connection with gender-based violence offences.
By Thursday morning, three operational teams had been deployed to conduct roadblocks, compliance inspections and general crime-prevention duties. During these activities, 46 undocumented foreign nationals were detained and handed over to immigration authorities. An employer was arrested and fined for hiring undocumented persons, while another suspect was taken into custody for harbouring illegal immigrants. Two further arrests were made for bribery after individuals attempted to influence officers to release detained immigrants.
A total of 639 people and 377 vehicles were searched as part of the day’s operations.
Patrols at 24 identified crime hotspots led to the arrest of one suspect for possession and dealing in drugs. Officers recovered eight ziplock bags of CAT and six shopping bags of dagga abandoned in a public area.
Compliance checks at 25 liquor outlets resulted in seven being shut down for contraventions of the Liquor Act. Confiscated liquor amounted to 521,930 ml.
The Tshwane Metro Police Department contributed significantly by issuing 71 AARTO infringement notices valued at R32,150.
Major-General Thine commended all participating partners for their commitment to safeguarding communities across Tshwane, noting that the sustained collaboration remains vital to maintaining public safety.
