In the early hours of Sunday 23 November 2025 at about 02:15, members of the South African Police Service in Atteridgeville were carrying out routine crime prevention patrols when they received information about a white Mazda Rustler that had been hijacked in Pretoria West and was believed to be heading towards the area.
Acting swiftly, officers took up strategic positions along an access route leading into Atteridgeville. The hijacked vehicle soon appeared and police attempted to bring it to a stop. The suspects refused to comply and sped away, prompting a high speed pursuit.
The chase continued until Tlou Street near Nkomo Village, where the suspects abandoned the vehicle and tried to escape on foot. While fleeing, they opened fire on the officers, who returned fire. Both suspects, aged 27 and 28, were injured and apprehended. They received medical attention at the scene before being taken to hospital under police guard.
Crime Scene Experts attended to process the area, where a firearm was recovered from one of the suspects. The men now face charges that include possession of a hijacked vehicle, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and attempted murder. Investigations are continuing to establish whether the suspects or the recovered firearm can be linked to other criminal cases.
Tshwane District Commissioner Major General Samuel Thine praised the officers for their rapid response and their dedication to preventing crime in the district.
