Major Law Enforcement Sweep in Tshwane Nets 310 Arrests

A coordinated policing initiative in Tshwane has led to the arrest of 310 suspects and the confiscation of a substantial quantity of liquor during a high impact Operation Shanela deployment in the Wonderboompoort and Pretoria North precincts on Saturday 29 November 2025.

The successful operation was driven by the Tshwane District Commissioner Major General Samuel Thine and supported by a wide network of South African Police Service units and partner agencies. These included the Department of Home Affairs, the Tshwane Metro Police Department, the Department of Community Safety, the Department of Correctional Services and local Community Policing Forums. Their collective participation formed a unified front aimed at reinforcing safety across the district.

The initiative commenced on Friday evening with an intensive tracing operation by detectives. This preliminary phase proved highly effective and resulted in 254 arrests. Among those apprehended were suspects wanted for theft, malicious damage to property, armed robbery and rape. A further 75 individuals facing charges related to gender based violence were taken into custody.

High visibility crime prevention activities followed through roadblocks, inspections and targeted patrols. These efforts strengthened community safety and ensured compliance with legislation. Officers conducted 600 searches of persons, examined 289 vehicles and verified the status of 15 vehicles to confirm they were not stolen.

Immigration compliance formed part of the operation and 37 undocumented foreign nationals were arrested and handed over to immigration authorities for processing.

Liquor enforcement teams inspected ten outlets and closed one establishment for contraventions of the Liquor Act. More than 481 litres of liquor were confiscated. Nine spaza shops were also visited as part of broader compliance checks. Traffic authorities issued 28 AARTO infringement notices amounting to R16 500 for violations of the Road Traffic Act.

Police attention was further directed to ten identified hotspot areas where ongoing drug related activity was detected. Two suspects were arrested for possession of drugs, and officers seized three ziplock bags of crystal meth.

Major General Thine expressed appreciation to all participating agencies for their continued commitment to building safer communities throughout Tshwane.
