Gauteng Police Arrest Over 900 Suspects During Operation Shanela II and Safer Festive Season

Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni spearheaded a comprehensive operation across the province on 29 November 2025, resulting in the arrest of more than 900 suspects involved in various serious crimes. The operation was executed simultaneously in all five districts, demonstrating a united effort to enhance community safety during the festive season.

During the operation, detectives successfully apprehended over 700 wanted suspects. Of particular concern were 174 arrests related to crimes against women and children. A notable roadblock at Langlaagte and Sophiatown policing precinct, led by Lieutenant General Mthombeni himself, yielded significant results including the arrest of 57 illegal immigrants, 14 individuals for drunk driving, and seven suspects dealing in drugs. Authorities also impounded a Volkswagen Polo for engine tampering and closed four liquor outlets for non-compliance with licensing regulations.

The initiative was a collaborative effort involving multiple law enforcement agencies such as the Department of Home Affairs, Gauteng Traffic Police, all Metropolitan Police Departments, Gauteng Crime Prevention Wardens, Community Policing Forums, and private security companies. This collective approach reflects the commitment of Gauteng Police to uphold safety and reduce crime across the province.

Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, spokesperson for SAPS Gauteng, emphasised the significance of such operations in creating safer environments for residents. “Our commitment remains unwavering in ensuring the safety of every Gauteng resident. We will continue to conduct targeted operations to combat crime and uphold the rule of law,” she stated.

The Gauteng Police remain dedicated to building safer communities and will persist with proactive measures to combat crime during this festive period and beyond.
