The Lenasia-based Atlantis Swimming Club hosted a successful movie night, themed Movies Under the Stars, on Friday, 6 December 2024, at the Wolves Grounds on Topaas Street, Ext 5. The event was a community gathering, with parents and children coming together to enjoy the evening under the night sky. Attendees brought blankets and camping gear, creating a cozy atmosphere to watch Spider-Man: No Way Home on a large outdoor screen.
The movie night was not only a fun community event, but it also served as a fundraising initiative for the Atlantis Swimming Club. The funds raised are crucial for supporting the development of young swimmers, enabling them to compete beyond local competitions and pursue greater opportunities. This aligns with the club’s mission to provide children with access to swimming and help them reach their full potential.
Vernicia Gibbs, the secretary of the Atlantis Swimming Club, highlighted the importance of the event, sharing, “We regularly hold fundraising events, but tonight is particularly important. Unfortunately, we've had limited access to swimming facilities this season, as some have been out of service, and we truly need your support more than ever.”
The funds raised from the event will go towards several critical needs, including purchasing uniforms and equipment for children in need, covering transport costs to competitions, and addressing much-needed repairs to the club’s training facilities.
The Atlantis Swimming Club has been a vital part of the Lenasia community for over 40 years. Although the club had to close around 15 years ago, the community rallied to help reopen it, and now the club is thriving, welcoming more children into its programs. Gibbs shared that the club offers a range of swimming programs, starting with the Learn to Swim (LTS) program, progressing to the Dolphins and Sharks levels, and ultimately guiding swimmers to the competitive level at Atlantis.
Beyond competitive swimming, Gibbs emphasized the broader benefits of the sport, saying, “Swimming provides not only physical fitness but also personal development. It helps with neurological balance, physical coordination, and teaches life skills.” She also noted that swimming helps children learn time management, become task-oriented, and build self-confidence.
In closing, Gibbs expressed the club's heartfelt thanks for the community’s support. "Your contributions mean the world to us," she said. The funds will help create a brighter future for young swimmers, both in and out of the pool, ensuring they have the tools they need to succeed.
