The Lenasia Athletic Club's Neon Nite Walk/Run on Saturday, 7 December 2024, was a resounding success, with approximately 4,000 participants coming together for an evening of energy, community, and philanthropy at Signet Terrace. The event, a vibrant night walk/run, attracted people from all walks of life, creating a unique experience for participants of all ages.
“We’re trying to get the community together. Unfortunately, we are a very big community, and we had to limit the number of participants to 4,000. But we had an absolutely wonderful response,” said Maya Nana, a representative from the Lenasia Athletic Club. The late surge in ticket sales—right up until the event’s start—showed the strong support from the local community.
Nana expressed her appreciation for the overwhelming enthusiasm, noting that the club’s future looks promising with such passionate backing. She also thanked the event’s sponsors, particularly Diadora, for providing the iconic neon t-shirts, as well as other sponsors who contributed fabric goodie bags filled with treats for participants.
The event was designed to be both a fun, healthy activity and a way to bring the community closer together. The R80 fee charged for participation was used to cover event costs, while also promoting the importance of fitness and encouraging local youth to stay active. “It’s important for young people to realize that staying active and being sporty is essential, and we want to motivate them to participate in events like this,” Nana added.
The Lenasia Athletic Club has been a staple of the local athletic scene since its establishment in the early 1990s. Originally founded as a training group for athletes preparing for the prestigious Comrades Marathon, the club has since expanded to support runners training for the Two Oceans Marathon. With a focus on long-distance running, the club has become an integral part of the community, offering coaching and camaraderie to athletes at all levels.
Looking ahead, the club is committed to nurturing young talent to ensure the continued growth and legacy of this beloved institution.
