Acting Executive Mayor of Johannesburg Satisfied with Weekend Water Infrastructure Upgrades

The Acting Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Councillor Nomoya Mnisi, has expressed satisfaction with the successful upgrades to the city's water infrastructure carried out over the weekend by Rand Water and Johannesburg Water. The major improvements to the Eikenhof and Zwartkopjes pump stations, completed between Friday, 13 December and Monday, 16 December 2024, are aimed at ensuring a more reliable water supply to Johannesburg’s residents.

During the upgrade period, some areas in Lenasia extensions experienced fluctuating water pressure, with low pressure on Saturday and intermittent water shortages in certain areas. However, by Monday evening, around 8-9 PM, water pressure was fully restored.

Mnisi praised the efforts of Rand Water and Johannesburg Water, emphasizing that these upgrades are part of ongoing initiatives to meet the city's growing water demands and improve service delivery. "We remain committed to ensuring that all Johannesburg residents have access to a reliable water supply. Both teams worked tirelessly over the weekend to minimize disruptions," she said.

In response to recent claims circulating on social media alleging the Executive Mayor’s absence, Mnisi clarified that the Executive Mayor is currently away on official Council business. She described the claims as misleading and reassured the public of her own active involvement in overseeing the city’s affairs.

Mnisi also confirmed that the Mayoral Committee has received a report on the recent SAMWU protest incident. A meeting with the South African Police Service and SAMWU leadership is scheduled for later this week to engage in constructive discussions and address any concerns raised. She reiterated the city's focus on delivering essential services while fostering collaboration with stakeholders and ensuring peaceful dialogue.
