Community Members Arrested for Vigilante Justice in Lenasia

Twelve community members, aged between 19 and 62, were arrested on Friday, December 13, 2024, at Nana's Farm, alongside the N12 in Lenasia, for allegedly burning four men accused of criminal activities in the area. The suspects also severely injured two others, who were rushed to the hospital.

It was reported that a group of local residents apprehended six males whom they accused of housebreaking and theft. The suspects then assaulted and set fire to the victims. Four of the men were declared dead at the scene, while two others were critically injured and hospitalized.

The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Gauteng, Lieutenant General Mthombeni, strongly condemned the vigilante actions, emphasizing that those who take the law into their own hands will face serious legal consequences. He urged the community to work with the police, stating, “The best thing the community can do is to apprehend suspected criminals and hand them over to law enforcement for proper legal proceedings. Vigilantism and murder are crimes, not justice.”

The arrested individuals now face charges of murder and attempted murder. They will  make their first appearance at the Lenasia Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, December 17, 2024.
