Heatwave expected to hit the city of Johannesburg

The City of Johannesburg, including Lenasia, is preparing for a severe heatwave beginning on December 4, 2024, with temperatures expected to exceed 37°C, which could create hazardous conditions. The South African Weather Service has issued a warning about the extreme heat, while the City of Johannesburg's Emergency Management Services (COJEMS) are on high alert in anticipation of the prolonged high temperatures.

Precautions for Residents:
In light of the extreme heat, residents are urged to take precautionary measures, including staying hydrated, wearing light clothing, and avoiding direct sun exposure, particularly during peak heat hours between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Those who can should remain indoors during the hottest parts of the day. COJEMS spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi, emphasized that the high temperatures could lead to heat-related illnesses such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke, making it crucial to monitor the situation closely.

Key Safety Tips from COJEMS:

1. Stay indoors when possible, especially during peak heat.
2. Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated and wear lightweight clothing.
3. Protect young children by using sunscreen and hats.
4. Avoid direct sun exposure between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM.
5. Visit local municipal swimming pools, which have lifeguards on duty, for relief from the heat.

Veld Fire Risk
The extreme heat, combined with dry and windy conditions, poses an increased risk of veld fires. Authorities advise against discarding burning cigarette butts in dry grass or leaving fires unattended.

Additional Tips to Survive the Heat:

- Wear hats and sunscreen to protect yourself from direct sunlight.
- Never leave children or pets in locked vehicles, as temperatures inside can rise dangerously.
- Seek shade and take frequent breaks if working outdoors.
- Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and carbonated drinks, which can dehydrate you.
- Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Swimming Pool Safety:
For those seeking relief from the heat by swimming, COJEMS offers these essential safety guidelines:
1. Always cover swimming pools with a safety net when not in use.
2. Install a high fence around the pool to prevent children from accessing it unsupervised, and ensure it is always locked.
3. Opt for municipal swimming pools, where lifeguards are on duty.

In Case of Emergency
For any life-threatening emergencies, residents should immediately contact the Emergency Services Call Centre at 011 375 5911.

Stay safe during the heatwave by following these guidelines to minimize the risks associated with extreme heat.
