As the festive season approaches, the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gauteng Province is increasing its presence in high-risk areas such as shopping malls, taxi ranks, bus stations, train stations and national highways to ensure the safety of residents and visitors. SAPS urges everyone to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
SAPS Provincial Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo shared the following key tips:
Top crimes targeted by SAPS:
- Crimes against women and children: including gender-based violence and femicide.
- Robbery: focuses on car thefts, business thefts, cash-in-transit thefts and residential thefts.
- Law Enforcement: SAPS will monitor the unauthorised use of fireworks and enforce road safety in close collaboration with traffic officers.
-Drunk Driving: SAPS will actively arrest those driving under the influence of alcohol. Road Safety: Speeding and roadworthiness checks will be carried out to ensure safer roads.
Tips for Business Owners:
- Security Measures: Install burglar gates, CCTV cameras, or hire security guards to protect your business. Cash Handling: Avoid keeping large sums of cash on-site, vary your banking times, and keep banking details confidential.
- Tips for Vehicle Owners:
-Secure Your Vehicle: Never leave valuables in plain sight, lock them away, and ensure windows are fully closed.
- Parking Safety: Do not park your car in unsecured areas at night as this makes them easy targets for criminals.
- ATM Safety: Stay close to your car to protect your PIN and never accept help from strangers. If anything disturbs you, cancel the transaction immediately.
Online Shopping:
-Beware of Scams: Always shop from trusted sites to avoid falling victim to scams.
Personal Safety Tips:
-Be alert: Walk in well-lit areas, preferably in groups, and be aware of your surroundings.
- Avoid displaying valuables: Do not carry large amounts of cash or expensive jewelry, and keep cell phones and other valuables out of sight.
-Party Precautions: Ensure your property is secured with alarm systems, outdoor lighting, and burglar bars. Notify your neighbors, security company, and police if you plan to be away, so they can monitor for suspicious activity.
Extra Security for Shopping and Parties:
Shopping:
- Never give your belongings to strangers and make sure your belongings are secure. Avoid giving money to people who offer products at suspicious prices. If possible, avoid taking children shopping.
Celebrate:
-Keep an eye on your drink at all times and take it with you if you need to leave the area. Only go out with people you know and trust to ensure your safety.
By staying vigilant and following these safety tips, residents and visitors can help ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday season.
