The closure of public pools in Lenasia Ext 2 and 5 has sparked widespread concern among residents, local councillors, and the media, with many expressing frustration over the lack of communication from the City of Johannesburg. The closures, which have left residents without access to much-needed recreational facilities, have raised questions about the reasons for the closures and the timeline for reopening.
Action 4 Accountability (A4A), a local advocacy group, has now demanded clarity from the City regarding the closures. A4A has organized two protest events to call attention to the issue. The first protest will take place on December 7, 2024, at the Lenasia Ext 2 pool at 10 am, followed by a second demonstration at the Lenasia Ext 5 pool on December 8, 2024, at 8 am. Participants are encouraged to wear swimsuits and join the picket to make their voices heard.
The closure of the pools, which many believe were shut down for refurbishment, has generated frustration among the community due to a lack of updates or consultations with local residents. The situation is compounded by questions about how much money is being spent on the refurbishment and why there has been no communication with local councillors or activists.
As the country observes Anti-Corruption Week, A4A is calling on the City of Johannesburg to be transparent about the costs and progress of the pool refurbishments and to provide a clear timeline for when the pools will reopen. The group has raised concerns that the project may have been carried out without proper community consultation, leaving residents in the dark.
