Drugs and alcohol can indeed have a devastating impact on individuals and communities. Their widespread abuse often leads to broken families, strained relationships, and in many cases, loss of life. The addictive nature of these substances, coupled with their destructive effects on physical and mental health, makes it challenging for many people to break free from their grip. Beyond the personal toll, communities often suffer from increased crime, poverty, and the strain on healthcare and social services. Addressing this issue requires a multi-faceted approach, including prevention, education, access to treatment, and support for affected individuals and families.
On Saturday, 9 November 2024, outside Logas Shop on Volta Street, Ext 10, the Extension 10 Group of Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous committee members from Lenasia Ext 10 and Thembelihle came together to give back to the community. They served a hearty meal of vegetable biryani to nearly 400 people, fostering a sense of unity and support within the local area. While sharing this delicious meal, members also took the opportunity to engage with the community, providing valuable information about the work their organizations do to support individuals struggling with addiction. This act of service not only nourished the body but also helped raise awareness about recovery and the importance of community support. Many people who gracefully accepted materials regarding drugs.
“We advise people that if they or someone that they know has a problem with drugs or alcohol that need help, they can attend our meetings every Wednesday night from 7:30pm to 8:30pm at Sharicrest Primary School. Our group is registered with both Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholic Anonymous,” said committee member Noor Farred
