The devastating loss of a 5-year-old Grade R student, who tragically passed away from her injuries after being struck by a taxi outside her school, Lenasia Model Primary School on Primary Streets, Ext 1,Lenasia on the morning of Wednesday, November 6, 2024, has left the school and the entire community in shock. The incident, which occurred around 7:30 am, has deeply affected the principal, teachers, students, and the wider community. As they come to terms with the tragedy, the school and local residents are united in mourning the loss of a young life.
The young girl was rushed to the Lenasia Ext 5 Clinic by the taxi driver, unfortunately while being treated she succumbed to her injuries.
“The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) is extremely saddened by an incident that occurred on Wednesday, 06 November 2024, where a 5-year-old, Grade R Girl learner from Lenasia Model Primary School was unfortunately hit by a taxi outside the school premises. Consequently, the said learner was taken to the nearest clinic to receive medical attention and the parents of the affected learner was informed. However, the learner succumbed to the injuries whilst being attended to,” said Steve Mabona, GDE spokesperson
Mabona added that according to the Psycho-Social Support team was dispatched to the school to provide the necessary trauma support and counselling.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the learner’s family and the school community at large, during this difficult period, he ended.
“We at the African Transformation Movement are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of a 5-year-old girl who lost her life at the Lenasia Ext 5 Clinic after being struck by a taxi this morning, 6 November 2024, outside Lenasia Model Primary School. Our hearts go out to her family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. This senseless tragedy highlights the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures to protect our children and communities. We stand in solidarity with the grieving family and call for immediate action to prevent such heartbreaking incidents from occurring in the future,” ATM City of Joburg Regional Chairperson, Councillor Lubabalo Magwentshu said.
Hindu Coordinating Council (HCC) Chairperson Kishore Badal, said that the HCC and its affiliates convey its deepest condolence to the family of a five year old learner from Model Primary School. This tragedy highlights a great need for self-introspection but most importantly cautioned motorists especially taxi drivers to be more mindful when driving.
Badal said: “We further call upon law enforcement agencies to priorities this matter and ensure that justice take its course, those who will be found to be on the wrong side of the law must account.”
Xolani Fihla, JMPD spokesperson said the traffic department was not contacted.
Provincial SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said; "On Wednesday, 2024/11/06, at approximately 08h30, police received a complaint of a child being knocked by a vehicle at Hevone Street. Police proceeded to the scene and on arrival they were informed that a five year old grade R child was bumped by a scholar transport vehicle and taken to the local medical care centre. The child later died. The driver of the vehicle was arrested."
