Man drowns after illegally connecting electricity and gets electrocuted

On Saturday, November 23, 2024, at approximately 2 p.m., a man in his 50s tragically lost his life after falling into a lake while attempting to illegally connect electricity outside his home at the Precast Informal Settlement in Extension 11. The man was electrocuted when he came into contact with live wires.

Pastor Kedi Mamaruti, a local leader from Precast, spoke with the man's wife, who confirmed that her husband had been engaged in the unlawful electricity connection at the time of the incident.

The South African Police Search and Rescue teams were called to the scene and recovered the man's body around 10 p.m.

This incident underscores the significant dangers of tampering with electrical systems, which can lead to severe injury or death. It also highlights the importance of legal and safe methods for accessing electricity.

I reached out to Captain Jeff Phora, the SAPS Joburg District spokesperson, for a comment. However, Captain Phora was unable to obtain a response from Lenasia SAPS for two days.
