Johannesburg Metro Police Department Traffic Warden Luleka Sobetshe, 37-year-old was tragically killed due to an alleged drunken driver of Renault Sandero who drove at a high-speed knocking her while she and her colleagues from By-Laws Management Unit were attending to two scenes on the N12 West Highway between Golden Highway and K43 in Eldorado Park on 2 July at 3am.

A wreath laying ceremony was held on 7 July at the spot to honour Warden Sobetshe. The ceremony was commemorated by the Acting Executive Mayor and MMC for Community Development in the City of Johannesburg Cllr Ronald Harris joined MMC for Public Safety Cllr David Tembe, the Acting Head of Department for Public Safety Vicky Manyathi, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Acting Chief of Police Thulani Khanyile, JMPD management, staff and the Sobetshe family.

The road was closed for a few hours as Sobetshe was remembered by many people who worked with her, and have been part of her life for many years and the proceedings from the wreath laying continued at the JMPD Wemmer Complex where a memorial service was conducted in honour of her.

“A 28-year-old male driver who fatally hit Traffic Warden was arrested by officers after he failed to stop at the accident scene. He was later breathalysed, and his reading was over the legal limit.  The driver was arrested on charges of culpable homicide, driving under the influence of alcohol, and failing to stop at an accident scene,” said JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla

Fihla explained that the driver then failed scene and officers gave chase and managed to apprehend the driver.  Emergency Services were called and unfortunately, Warden Sobetshe was declared deceased on the scene.

The suspect was detained at Eldorado Park SAPS and appeared at Kliptown Magistrates Court.

JMPD Acting Chief of Police Thulani Maxwell Khanyile and the whole department send their deepest and heartfelt condolences to the Sobetshe family, friends, and colleagues. May her dear soul repose peacefully.
