Fire broke out a store at Protea Gardens

Protea Gardens Mall, Soweto was plunged by community members who flocked to the mall after 7pm when they saw a fire. 

It is unclear how the fire started at the mall at Nizam shop and spread to Roots Butchery and another store. 

The City of Johannesburg (COJ) EMS Fire Department responded to the call immediately and have been scene doing their best to contain the flames. 

According to Nana Radebe-Kgiba, spokesperson COJ EMS she said, "We received a call just after 7pm about a fire at Protea Gardens Mall, on arrival we found that two shops were on fire affected. We will do a preliminary investigation after the fire has been completely contained."

Ward 10 Councillor Nokuthula Nofemela said: "A fire started at Nizam's shop, and it is not known at this stage as to how the fire started and has spread to other shops. No injuries were reported.
