SAPS Praises Officer’s Extraordinary Bravery in High-Risk Crocodile River Operation

The Acting National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, has commended the exceptional courage and selflessness of Captain Johan “Pottie” Potgieter following a perilous operation along the Komati River.

Captain Potgieter demonstrated remarkable bravery when he was hoisted from a SANParks helicopter into a crocodile-infested river to assist in a complex recovery operation. Operating under extremely dangerous conditions, the officer secured a crocodile using a rope, enabling specialists to safely retrieve the animal. The crocodile had already been euthanised as part of the operation.

The recovery subsequently allowed police and forensic experts to access human remains believed to belong to a missing person. SAPS confirmed that body parts recovered from the crocodile’s intestines have been sent for DNA analysis to establish the identity of the deceased.

Lieutenant General Dimpane praised Captain Potgieter for displaying courage that went far beyond the call of duty, highlighting the personal risk involved in carrying out the task.

The National Spokesperson of SAPS, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, said the operation underscored the commitment and professionalism of SAPS members who continue to place public service above personal safety. Brigadier Mathe emphasised that the successful outcome was the result of close cooperation between SAPS, SANParks and other specialist teams.

SAPS has saluted Captain Potgieter for his heroism, professionalism and dedication, describing his actions as a powerful reminder of the daily sacrifices made by police officers in service of the nation.
