Police have made a significant breakthrough in the murder of Saxonwold attorney Bouwer van Niekerk, following the arrest of a suspect almost eight months after the fatal shooting.

A 33-year-old man was arrested on 29 April 2026 in connection with the murder of the 43-year-old attorney, who was shot at his law practice in Saxonwold on 5 September 2025. The arrest follows intensive investigations conducted by the Gauteng Provincial Investigating Unit.

The suspect appeared before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 4 May 2026, where the matter was postponed to 11 May 2026 for a formal bail application. He remains in police custody.

Speaking on the development, SAPS Gauteng Provincial Spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the arrest reflects the commitment of police to pursue justice, regardless of the time it takes.

“The arrest of the suspect demonstrates the dedication and perseverance of our investigators. We want to assure the public that serious crimes such as murder are thoroughly investigated, and those responsible will be brought before the courts,” said Colonel Nevhuhulwi.

At the time of the incident, police launched a large-scale manhunt after the attorney was accosted and shot dead at his offices. Initial reports indicated that approximately four men arrived at the practice in a GMW vehicle, posing as clients who had booked an appointment. Two of the men entered the premises, and while inside the boardroom, gunshots were heard. The suspects fled the scene immediately thereafter.

The attorney was declared dead at the scene. The motive for the attack was unknown at the time, and investigations remain ongoing.

Colonel Nevhuhulwi commended members of the public who provided information during the investigation and reiterated the importance of community cooperation.

“We continue to encourage anyone with information relating to serious crimes to come forward. Even the smallest detail can assist investigations and help ensure accountability,” she said.

Members of the public with information are urged to contact the Crime Stop Line on 08600 10111 or submit anonymous tip-offs via the mMySAPS App, available on smartphone platforms.
