Body Recovered from Orlando Dam After Overnight Search Operation


Gauteng Police Emergency Services have confirmed the recovery of the body of an adult male from Orlando Dam, near the Soweto Towers, following a search and rescue operation conducted by Gauteng K9 Search and Rescue Services.

The incident occurred on Saturday, 2 May 2026, when community members taking part in recreational activities at Orlando Dam alerted authorities after noticing a body in the water. At approximately 12:55, K9 Search and Rescue divers were deployed to the dam, located at the corner of Nicholas and Chris Hani Road in Soweto. Due to poor water visibility, the search was suspended later that day in the interest of safety.

Operations resumed on Sunday, 3 May 2026, with rescue teams utilising an inflatable vessel to continue the search. The body of a 40-year-old man, who sustained visible injuries, was located floating in the dam and recovered. The deceased was handed over to members of the South African Police Service at Orlando SAPS, where an inquest docket was opened to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.

Gauteng Police Emergency Services spokesperson Raymond Sambo said the recovery followed careful coordination and adherence to safety protocols. “Our members acted swiftly once alerted, however the conditions in the water made it unsafe to proceed on Saturday. The operation resumed as soon as it was feasible, leading to the successful recovery of the body. We extend our appreciation to the community members who reported the incident and assisted by providing timely information.”
