The South African Police Service in the Johannesburg District arrested 33 suspects during a multidisciplinary crime prevention operation conducted in the Douglasdale policing precinct on Wednesday, 30 April 2026.
The operation, known as Operation Shanela 2, was led by the Johannesburg District Commissioner, Major General Nonhlanhla Kubheka. It was implemented to combat crime, enforce the law and enhance community safety within the district.
Members of the South African Police Service from various stations and specialised units across the district participated in the operation. They were supported by other law enforcement and community partners, including the Department of Home Affairs, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department, the Community Policing Forum, local religious leaders and private security companies.
The operation focused on roadblocks, stop and search activities and liquor compliance enforcement. During the operation, one suspect was arrested for possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle. Preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle had been reported stolen in Brits in the North West Province. A further three suspects were arrested for possession of suspected stolen property.
In addition, 28 suspects were arrested for contraventions related to illegal immigration. Liquor compliance inspections were carried out, resulting in the closure of one liquor outlet for non compliance with legal requirements.
At the roadblocks, police searched a total of 579 people and 259 vehicles. Fourteen traffic fines were issued to motorists who were found to be in violation of traffic laws.
During the same period, district detectives conducted parallel operations across Johannesburg District, leading to the arrest of 266 suspects for various crimes. Of these, 56 suspects were arrested for offences related to gender based violence.
The South African Police Service remains committed to continuing these operations to prevent crime and to ensure that communities within the Johannesburg District are and feel safe.
