The South African Police Service (SAPS) has dismissed as false and misleading a WhatsApp message circulating on social media about a purported shutdown in Gauteng scheduled for Monday, 26 May 2025.
According to the National Commissioner of SAPS, General Fannie Masemola, the message—which alleges planned disruptions including highway blockages, school closures, shutdowns of the American Embassy and Consulate, and targeted attacks on food outlets—is entirely unfounded and intended to cause unnecessary panic.
“This message seeks only to incite fear, bully communities, and disrupt public peace. We urge all members of the public to ignore and refrain from sharing this message further,” said General Masemola.
He further warned that the spread of fake news and incitement to violence is a criminal offense, and those responsible will face legal consequences.
General Masemola reassured residents that SAPS, in collaboration with the Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, and other law enforcement partners—including JMPD, TMPD, EMPD, National and Provincial Traffic Authorities, and private security firms—is fully mobilized to ensure **public safety and maintain order**.
“We are not going to allow lawlessness and acts of criminality. Those found breaking the law will be dealt with accordingly. The N1 (Sandton and Pretoria), M1, and M2 motorways will remain open,” he added.
Authorities confirm that there will be no shutdown or road closures. All schools, businesses, and essential services will remain open and fully operational across Gauteng.
The SAPS is calling on communities to remain calm, vigilant, and to report any suspicious activities. Law enforcement agencies remain on high alert and will respond swiftly to any unlawful activity.
The public is also urged to support efforts to uphold the law and reject any actions aimed at undermining peace and safety in the province.
