On Tuesday afternoon, May 27, at approximately 4 PM, the intersection of K43 and Capella Street in Ext 9 Lenasia, near Ahmed Kathrada Private Hospital (Lenmed Hospital), was the scene of a devastating accident.
Sadly, two individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, while a third succumbed to injuries at Lenmed Hospital. One of the deceased at the scene required extrication from the vehicle by the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (COJEMS) Fire Department.
A rapid response was initiated by the JML High Care Tow Truck Unit, along with Pulsate Private Ambulance, Saaberie Chishty Ambulance, Gauteng Emergency Medical Services, COJEMS, and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD). They promptly began treating patients with injuries ranging from critical to minor, with some individuals transported to hospitals for further medical care.
“JMPD officers responded to a multi-vehicle accident involving four cars: a white Hyundai Accent driven by a male with four male passengers, a red Mazda Drifter driven by a male with no passengers, a white Kia Rio driven by a female with no passengers, and a maroon Renault Clio driven by a female with one female passenger,” stated JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla.
Preliminary reports suggest that the white Hyundai Accent was traveling south on K43 Road, while the other three vehicles were heading north in succession. The driver of the Hyundai Accent allegedly attempted to overtake the vehicle in front. During this maneuver, the Hyundai Accent side-swiped the right rear of the Mazda Drifter, subsequently colliding head-on with the Kia Rio. Following this impact, the Renault Clio struck the Kia Rio, causing it to veer off the road.
“Tragically, the driver and one of the four passengers in the Hyundai Accent suffered fatal injuries and were declared dead at the scene. Their bodies were transported to the Diepkloof Mortuary. The other three passengers in the Hyundai sustained serious injuries and were taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital for medical treatment,” explained Fihla.
He further noted that the driver of the Mazda Drifter was unharmed at the scene. The driver of the Kia Rio sustained serious injuries and was taken to Lenmed Hospital, where she was sadly pronounced dead upon arrival. The driver of the Renault Clio suffered minor injuries and was also taken to Lenmed Hospital for medical attention, while the passenger in the Renault was unharmed.
A case of culpable homicide will be opened at Lenasia SAPS for further investigation.
The JMPD extends its heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes a swift recovery to those injured. They urge all motorists to comply with traffic laws to ensure the safety of all road users.
