Top 3 Independent School Learners Photo: GDE

Learners from independent schools continue to set a high bar for matric results, and this year, Lenasia Muslim School (LMS) proudly contributed to that tradition of excellence. On Tuesday, 14 January 2025, LMS celebrated a remarkable achievement when learner Zakiya Amod was awarded 2nd place in the Top 3 Independent School category at the Gauteng Department of Education Class of 2024 Awards held at Vodaworld, Midrand. This recognition underscores not only Zakiya’s hard work and dedication but also the high academic standards maintained by independent schools across the province.

This achievement highlights the ongoing success of independent school learners, who continually rise to the challenge, demonstrating excellence in academics and inspiring others. The accomplishment of LMS is a testament to the exceptional standards of education fostered by independent schools and the collaborative efforts of students and educators.

At the same time, the achievements of Lenasia's public high schools also deserve recognition. These schools have consistently demonstrated resilience, hard work, and dedication, achieving outstanding results year after year. The commitment of students, teachers, and families has contributed significantly to the academic success of the Lenasia community, and their achievements continue to showcase the value of both independent and public education in shaping future leaders.

The **2024 Gauteng Department of Education Class Awards** celebrated the province’s academic excellence, honoring learners and schools across various categories. Exceptional students were recognized in subjects like Business Studies, Economics, Geography, History, English, Life Sciences, Accounting, Physical Science, Mathematics Literacy, and Mathematics. Other accolades included awards for the Top 3 LSEN (Learners with Special Education Needs) Schools, Most Improved School (Harry Gwala Award), and Top Performing Township School and Learners.

The event also celebrated Gauteng’s overall pass rate of 88.4%, positioning the province as the third-highest performer in the National Senior Certificate (NSC) results. This outstanding achievement reflects the province's dedication to education and the collective efforts of families, teachers, and communities.

Gauteng MEC for Education, Matome Chilone, praised the success, noting the rise of non-fee-paying schools and emphasizing that quality education is not determined solely by financial resources. He highlighted the resilience of students and the importance of commitment and support in ensuring student success. This challenges the belief that educational quality is dependent on funding, demonstrating that dedication and effort are fundamental to achieving excellence in all schools.

As Gauteng continues to set a high standard for education, the future looks bright for learners across the province, ensuring continued academic success for years to come.

One fatally wounded and two escape injury

A tragic shooting occurred on Hydrangea Avenue in Lenasia on Thursday evening, 9 January 2025, resulting in the death of a 35-year-old male. Two other individuals who were present at the scene narrowly escaped injury, with the bullets missing them by mere inches.

Lieutenant Colonel Mpho Tshetlhani, SAPS spokesperson, confirmed that a case of murder and attempted murder has been opened at the Lenasia Police Station, though no arrests have been made as investigations continue.

The police are urging the community to come forward with any information that could assist in the investigation. Tips can be provided anonymously by calling the crime stop number at 0860010111 or using the MySAPSApp.

Waterworks residents frustrated with lack of police visibility

Residents of Waterworks, located behind the Military Base in Lenasia, are raising concerns over the lack of police presence in their area. This community, spanning both Ward 10 in Johannesburg and Ward 17 in Mogale City, has expressed frustration about insufficient law enforcement, which they believe compromises their safety. Despite several requests for increased police attention, they feel neglected.

On January 15, 2025, a local resident reported a robbery at a Pakistani-owned shop at 2 pm. The robber, armed with a gun, stole an undisclosed amount of money before fleeing in a metallic gold VW Polo with registration number HV73FYGP. The resident, who chose to remain anonymous, explained that they did not report the incident to the police due to a lack of trust in law enforcement, citing frequent patrols in Lenasia but almost no police presence in Waterworks.

The resident further claimed that when they attempted to report the robbery, the police refused to open a case, citing the shop owner's failure to comply with regulations.

In response to the community's concerns, Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi encouraged residents to formally open cases to facilitate proper investigations. She also provided the Gauteng Service Complaints number for the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), 082 442 2000, for complaints related to police service or misconduct.

Spiritual Chords Making a Difference for the Community

Farming or growing plants might seem challenging to some, but many people, like our parents and grandparents, have successfully cultivated small vegetable gardens at home. These home gardens not only provide fresh produce but also offer a sense of fulfillment and connection to nature. With the right knowledge, patience, and care, anyone can grow their own vegetables and reap the benefits of home gardening.

The Spiritual Chords Foundation has played a pivotal role in supporting individuals and families who struggled during the Covid-19 pandemic. By promoting and supporting home gardening initiatives, they empowered many to grow their own food, providing a crucial source of nourishment and income during tough times. This initiative helped alleviate food insecurity and fostered a sense of self-sufficiency and community resilience.

Spiritual Chords' outstanding initiative in Lenasia, a small town in the south of Johannesburg, has become a beacon of hope. The JOCOD School on Peshawar Street, Ext 11, Lenasia, hosts the Spiritual Chords Sustainable Agriculture Project, which was launched in 2020 in response to the dire need for food security during the pandemic.

The decision to establish the farm came from Safeeyah Moosa, the founder and director of Spiritual Chords. Her vision wasn’t just about planting seeds—it was about sowing hope in a time of despair. As families struggled to put food on the table, Spiritual Chords saw the urgent need for a sustainable solution that would foster food security, promote self-reliance, and restore dignity.

“The initiative goes beyond immediate hunger relief. It aims to create a long-term strategy that addresses food sovereignty and counters the helplessness created by poverty. Through skills development, entrepreneurship opportunities, and a focus on environmental care, the project is paving the way for a self-sufficient and eco-conscious community,” said Moosa.

The benefits of the farm are multi-dimensional. Community members gain essential skills that empower them to uplift themselves and their families. As workers are trained in sustainable agricultural practices, they not only contribute to food production but also rediscover hope and motivation.

“One of the most significant impacts is food security. The farm supplies fresh, healthy, organic vegetables at affordable prices, improving nutrition within the community. Additionally, the project offers agricultural training to people of all backgrounds, including disabled adults and school children. This helps instill an understanding of their role in building a sustainable future,” Moosa explained.

Moosa emphasized that agriculture is a powerful tool for job creation, especially in areas with high unemployment. The skills acquired on the farm open doors to employment opportunities not just within the project, but also within the wider agricultural sector. By teaching people how to cultivate crops, manage farm activities, and operate small agricultural businesses, the initiative fosters a sense of responsibility and provides long-term career prospects.

The focus of Spiritual Chords is on cultivating staple vegetables such as spinach, cabbage, carrots, peas, cilantro, herbs like lavender and rosemary, as well as potatoes and citrus trees. This variety meets local dietary needs while creating a nurturing working environment where individuals take pride in their work. As they learn to manage these crops, participants gain valuable knowledge in sustainable farming practices, fostering a connection to the land.

Moosa pointed out that farming isn’t just physical labor; it requires essential skills such as commitment, patience, and a nurturing attitude. A desire for sustainable solutions is key, as well as an understanding that the earth must thrive for future generations. Farming also teaches resilience, teamwork, and problem-solving—skills that participants carry with them beyond the farm.

In conclusion, the Sustainable Agriculture Project in Lenasia, established by Spiritual Chords, stands as a testament to the resilience and creativity of communities facing challenges. By addressing immediate needs and creating lasting change, Spiritual Chords is nurturing not just plants but also people. As the initiative continues to grow, it serves as a model for sustainable solutions to hunger, poverty, and environmental care in Lenasia and beyond.

Through dedication, creativity, and collaboration, the project not only promises a brighter future for individuals but also contributes to the greater good of society and the planet.

Dirt suffocates residents of Lenasia CBD

Lenasia's Central Business District (CBD) is grappling with a growing pollution crisis, as its streets and sidewalks become increasingly clogged with litter and waste, posing health and environmental risks. Local residents and business owners have voiced concerns over the deteriorating state of the area, urging for immediate action to clean up the environment and restore the CBD’s appeal.

The key issues fueling this pollution problem include improper waste disposal, insufficient public awareness, and inadequate city maintenance. A major concern is the long-neglected stormwater drains, which are blocked and often misused by vagrants and informal hawkers. The absence of regular maintenance and waste management systems has worsened the situation. Many residents and businesses are now calling for more community involvement and improved municipal support to tackle these problems effectively.

Yunus Bhamjee from the Lenasia Business Forum emphasized the urgency of addressing the blocked stormwater drains, which not only create an unsightly mess but also foster criminal activity and public health concerns. He advocates for regular cleaning and inspection of drains to ensure proper functioning. In addition, Bhamjee suggests installing signage to prevent the misuse of drains and modifying their design to make them less accessible to informal users. He also stresses the need for a streamlined system to report and address drainage issues quickly.

Indiran Govender, a concerned local resident, expressed frustration over the persistent littering in key areas like Rose Avenue near the taxi rank, Camelia and Honeysuckle, and Flamingo and Rose. He believes that Lenasia’s development plans to become the "next Sandton" are being undermined by the lack of action in curbing litter and improving waste management. Despite the presence of designated dumping sites, littering remains a widespread problem, and Govender fears that the area’s image and quality of life are suffering as a result.

Community leaders, like Mohammed Azhar Bulbulia from Active Citizenry Lenasia, echo these concerns, stressing the need to prioritize cleanliness and safety in the CBD to foster a thriving urban environment. Both residents and businesses agree that a collaborative approach between local authorities, community groups, and businesses is essential to tackle the waste management crisis and ensure a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable environment for all.

Tragic Incident on New Year's Eve in Waterworks: Homicide and Community Response

Residents of Waterworks were heartbroken following a deadly confrontation on December 31, 2024, involving two men—one Basotho and one Zulu—resulting in the death of a Basotho man. It is believed that the incident arose from an argument between two Basotho gang members and a Zulu individual who was trying to exit the gang.

A community member, who requested anonymity, reported that the conflict began at a local spaza shop when the Basotho men demanded two beers from the Zulu man, who declined. This refusal escalated into a violent clash, during which the Zulu man allegedly defended himself by seizing a stick from his attackers. He struck one of the Basotho men in the neck, causing him to fall, while he managed to scare off the second assailant. Following the altercation, the Zulu man sought refuge at a friend's home, where he recounted the incident.

Just before midnight, the Zulu man returned to his shack only to discover it ablaze. He was able to put out the fire, but soon after, he was attacked again. Using the same stick, he was confronted by the Basotho assailants once more, and this time, he fatally injured one of them. The other attacker escaped into the field. After showing his friend the scene, the Zulu man returned to rest.

The next morning, when police arrived, the suspect had already fled. The community member noted that no forensic investigation took place, and no photographs were taken of the crime scene, with only the body being retrieved by the authorities.

However, a community member spotted the fleeing suspect hiding in the field and alerted others. The community, dissatisfied with the lack of police action, organized a search for the suspect. After a tumultuous chase, he was located near Protea South after jumping onto the N12 highway. He allegedly confessed to the homicide and revealed the names of his accomplices, indicating their involvement in stealing copper cables from a military base in Lenasia, as well as from railway stations and other places.

The community ensured that the suspect was not harmed during the apprehension. Around 5:22 PM, the police were notified, but yet again, there was no swift response. Annoyed by the inadequate support, the residents chose to take action themselves and handed the suspect over to the police, who had previously been unresponsive.

This event emphasizes the increasing discontent within the community regarding the ineffectiveness of policing and the sense of obligation residents feel to intervene when law enforcement fails to act.

SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Mpho Tshetlhani, confirmed that a murder case has been filed at the Lenasia police station. The suspect was arrested and appeared in court on January 6, 2025. Investigations by the police are currently ongoing.

Two Killed and Three Injured in Random Shooting in Waterworks

The festive season, starting around December 20, 2024, brought celebrations for many, but for two residents, aged 25 and 39, it ended in tragedy. At around 11:45 p.m. on December 20, a shooting at a tavern in Waterworks, near the Military Base in Lenasia, resulted in the deaths of two individuals. Three others, aged 23, 25, and 35, were injured and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Authorities are investigating the situation, which has shocked the local community, as many were enjoying their evening before chaos erupted.

Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, a spokesperson for Provincial SAPS, stated that a murder and attempted murder case is underway following the shooting at Waterworks. It is reported that a man entered a local tavern and randomly shot at customers, killing two and injuring three. The suspect has not been apprehended yet, but the investigation team is pursuing leads.

The community is being urged to cooperate with the police in fighting crime by reporting any suspicious activities to their local station or the Crime Stop Line at 08600 10111. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through the MySAPSApp, available on smartphones.

This violence has deeply affected the community, and authorities are encouraging anyone with information to step forward to help catch the suspect.

One of the injured mothers shared her account of the incident. The shooting began at a tavern called Mashaka, where individuals were shot in their feet and arms. The attackers then moved to another tavern, fatally shooting the owner, who died at the scene, while his wife remains in hospital. Police have not yet gathered statements from the injured.

A community member reported that a shooting occurred shortly before Christmas, leading to two deaths and injuries to 28 people across two separate shebeens between 11:30 PM and midnight, involving both the owner and a patron.

Police have confirmed that only three people were reported injured.

Illegal dumping becoming a major concern

Illegal dumping is a serious problem in Lenasia, affecting the community's health and well-being. The bad smells, piles of rubbish, and blocked paths reduce quality of life and create health hazards. Residents who once enjoyed a clean environment now struggle with limited mobility and cannot enjoy fresh air outside.

Muzi Mkhwanazi, a spokesperson for Pikitup Waste Management, provided insights on the issue of illegal dumping in Lenasia and how it can be tackled. Key points include:

Preventing Illegal Dumping: Residents must avoid improper waste disposal. If they have extra waste before collection days, they can take it to local Pikitup waste management facilities.

Environmental and Health Impacts: Illegal dumping harms the environment. Hazardous waste can pollute water sources, endangering wildlife and making water unsafe to drink. A dirty environment poses health risks and discourages investment, harming the local economy.

Enforcement and Penalties: The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) enforces waste laws. Fines for illegal dumping are R1500, and if a vehicle is dumping waste and is not roadworthy, JMPD will impound it.

Reporting Illegal Dumpers: Residents should report illegal dumping to JMPD. If a vehicle is involved, they should photograph the vehicle, note its registration number, date, and location, and send this information via WhatsApp to JMPD at 0827791361.

Responsible Waste Disposal: Proper waste disposal can reduce illegal dumping. Pikitup offers free bulky waste collection, allowing residents to discard large items like old furniture. Additionally, those renting out back rooms can request extra waste bins for increased waste management.

By promoting responsible disposal habits and using available services, the community can work towards reducing illegal dumping and fostering a cleaner, healthier Lenasia.

Alert: Emergence of Fraudulent SAPS Training Applications

                     Pic: Road safety

The increase in fraudulent applications for training with the South African Police Service (SAPS) presents a significant risk to the public. These scams are designed to mislead individuals into disclosing personal information or paying fees for non-existent programs. It is imperative, particularly for residents in Lenasia and throughout the nation, to recognize the common signs of these scams and to implement proactive measures for safeguarding themselves.

“The South African Police Service (SAPS) has received numerous inquiries regarding its recruitment process and the selection of entry-level police trainees for the 2024/2025 intake,” stated SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Van Wyk.

She further noted that the final screening phase of this process is currently ongoing across all nine provinces, which includes interviews being conducted with the applicants' next of kin and other community members. Applicants are encouraged to fully cooperate in order to facilitate the finalization of this process.

“The SAPS will, in due course, issue correspondence to notify those applicants who are successful. If applicants have not been contacted, they should accept that their application was unsuccessful. Training is anticipated to commence in the forthcoming weeks, with the exact date to be communicated in due course,” Colonel Van Wyk elaborated.

She concluded by stating that in December 2024, 2,699 newly trained constables graduated and have now been deployed to various stations and units to enhance SAPS crime-fighting efforts.

Key Strategies for Prevention:

1. Official Communication Channels: Always verify information through official SAPS channels, such as their official website, verified social media accounts, or government portals. It is essential to note that SAPS will never request upfront payments for recruitment purposes.

2. No Registration Fees: Genuine SAPS recruitment processes typically do not require any payment for the submission of applications. Exercise caution towards any applications that stipulate fees for training registration or processing, as these are likely to be fraudulent.

3. Skepticism Towards Unbelievable Offers: Treat offers that appear too good to be true—such as those promising expedited processing or guaranteed selection—with a healthy degree of skepticism. These are often indicative of potential fraud.

4. Verification Steps: Should you have any doubts regarding the legitimacy of recruitment announcements, it is advisable to contact local SAPS offices directly or utilize government helplines for confirmation.

5. Stay Informed on Warnings:Remain vigilant to advisories and alerts issued by SAPS or local authorities concerning known scams. Staying informed can significantly aid in avoiding victimization by these schemes.

By fostering awareness of these warning signs and promoting vigilance within the community, we can considerably diminish the number of individuals who fall prey to these deceptive practices. It is crucial that we collaborate to safeguard our community from such fraudulent activities.

Tragic Shooting Claims Two Lives and Leaves Three Injured in Waterworks

The festive season, which commenced around December 20, 2024, is traditionally a time of joy and celebration. However, for two residents, aged 25 and 39, the holiday spirit was shattered by tragedy. At approximately 11:45 p.m. on December 20, a shooting erupted at a tavern in Waterworks, located behind the Military Base in Lenasia, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to three others, aged 23, 25, and 35. The injured were promptly transported to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, which has left the local community in shock. Many had gathered at the tavern to enjoy their evening when the unexpected violence occurred. Provincial SAPS spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi stated, “A case of murder and attempted murder is being investigated following a shooting that occurred at Waterworks on December 20, 2024. It is alleged that a man entered a local tavern and randomly shot at patrons, killing two people and injuring three.”

As of now, the suspect remains at large, but the investigative team is actively pursuing leads. Colonel Nevhuhulwi urged community members to assist the police in combating crime by reporting any suspicious activities to their nearest police station or via the Crime Stop Line at 08600 10111. Information can also be submitted anonymously through the MySAPSApp, available for download on any smartphone.

The community is grappling with the aftermath of this senseless violence, and authorities are calling for anyone with information to step forward to aid in the pursuit of justice. One of the injured mothers shared her harrowing experience, explaining that the shooting began at a tavern known as Mashaka, where patrons were struck in the feet and arms. The assailants subsequently moved to another tavern, where the owner was shot multiple times and succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His wife is currently hospitalized.

Despite rumors circulating about a larger number of injuries, police have confirmed that only three individuals were reported injured in this tragic incident. This shooting has not only claimed lives but has also left a community mourning and seeking answers as they navigate the aftermath of such a brutal act of violence.

CoJ's Public Safety Deputy Director meets the community of Waterworks

The City of Johannesburg's Public Safety team is dedicated to prioritizing safety, working relentlessly to create a secure environment for residents and visitors. Their efforts encompass a range of initiatives, from crime prevention and emergency response to community outreach, all aimed at ensuring the well-being of everyone in the city.

On Sunday, 5 January 2025, the Deputy Director from the Public Safety office, DD Mkhabela accompanied by officers from the Johannesburg Metro Police Department, held a crucial community meeting at the Ancient of Days Royal House Church in the Waterworks Informal Settlement, behind the Military Base, Lenasia. The gathering addressed a range of pressing issues affecting the community, including the escalating crime crisis, which has resulted in the loss of innocent lives and the injury of many. The discussion highlighted the pervasive drug problem, which continues to cause significant harm within the area.

Community members expressed frustration with the Lenasia SAPS, citing a lack of support and insufficient police visibility in the area. The community also voiced concerns over the inadequacy of resources for the Community Policing Forum (CPF) patrollers, who are tasked with safeguarding the community but currently lack the proper safety gear needed for their patrols.

The meeting underscored the urgent need for greater cooperation between the police, local authorities, and residents to address these challenges and create a safer environment for everyone in the community.

The Deputy Director Mkhabela emphasized the importance of working together with law enforcement to tackle crime and improve safety, stating that cooperation with the community is crucial for success. He reassured business owners, particularly those running spaza shops, that the Department of Public Safety is there to protect them and that accusations of discrimination or bias against black businesses were unfounded. He also highlighted the necessity for business owners to comply with city regulations, such as informing the city before starting a business and ensuring their establishments meet safety and zoning requirements.

The Deputy Director further discussed the department's approach to addressing crime, stating that, while law enforcement often focuses on crime prevention, there is a broader mandate to also ensure the safety of residents, particularly in informal settlements. He explained that the department conducts thorough assessments, audits, and community engagement to ensure that settlements meet safety standards. In cases of hazardous conditions, such as hijacked buildings, they collaborate with other departments, including Human Settlements and social workers, to ensure vulnerable residents are moved to safer places.

He reiterated that public safety officers will not be intimidated by criminals and emphasized the department's commitment to working on the ground and maintaining a visible presence in the community. He expressed the importance of preemptive crime prevention, including intelligence gathering and profiling to identify potential threats before they escalate. He also underscored the responsibility of parents and the community to protect children from involvement in criminal activities and from being exposed to dangerous environments such as taverns.

Finally, he assured the community that the Public Safety Department, alongside Johannesburg Metro Police, is committed to safeguarding all residents of Johannesburg, regardless of their background, and pledged to continue working tirelessly to ensure their security.
