The festive season, starting around December 20, 2024, brought celebrations for many, but for two residents, aged 25 and 39, it ended in tragedy. At around 11:45 p.m. on December 20, a shooting at a tavern in Waterworks, near the Military Base in Lenasia, resulted in the deaths of two individuals. Three others, aged 23, 25, and 35, were injured and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Authorities are investigating the situation, which has shocked the local community, as many were enjoying their evening before chaos erupted.
Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, a spokesperson for Provincial SAPS, stated that a murder and attempted murder case is underway following the shooting at Waterworks. It is reported that a man entered a local tavern and randomly shot at customers, killing two and injuring three. The suspect has not been apprehended yet, but the investigation team is pursuing leads.
The community is being urged to cooperate with the police in fighting crime by reporting any suspicious activities to their local station or the Crime Stop Line at 08600 10111. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through the MySAPSApp, available on smartphones.
This violence has deeply affected the community, and authorities are encouraging anyone with information to step forward to help catch the suspect.
One of the injured mothers shared her account of the incident. The shooting began at a tavern called Mashaka, where individuals were shot in their feet and arms. The attackers then moved to another tavern, fatally shooting the owner, who died at the scene, while his wife remains in hospital. Police have not yet gathered statements from the injured.
A community member reported that a shooting occurred shortly before Christmas, leading to two deaths and injuries to 28 people across two separate shebeens between 11:30 PM and midnight, involving both the owner and a patron.
Police have confirmed that only three people were reported injured.
