Illegal dumping becoming a major concern

Illegal dumping is a serious problem in Lenasia, affecting the community's health and well-being. The bad smells, piles of rubbish, and blocked paths reduce quality of life and create health hazards. Residents who once enjoyed a clean environment now struggle with limited mobility and cannot enjoy fresh air outside.

Muzi Mkhwanazi, a spokesperson for Pikitup Waste Management, provided insights on the issue of illegal dumping in Lenasia and how it can be tackled. Key points include:

Preventing Illegal Dumping: Residents must avoid improper waste disposal. If they have extra waste before collection days, they can take it to local Pikitup waste management facilities.

Environmental and Health Impacts: Illegal dumping harms the environment. Hazardous waste can pollute water sources, endangering wildlife and making water unsafe to drink. A dirty environment poses health risks and discourages investment, harming the local economy.

Enforcement and Penalties: The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) enforces waste laws. Fines for illegal dumping are R1500, and if a vehicle is dumping waste and is not roadworthy, JMPD will impound it.

Reporting Illegal Dumpers: Residents should report illegal dumping to JMPD. If a vehicle is involved, they should photograph the vehicle, note its registration number, date, and location, and send this information via WhatsApp to JMPD at 0827791361.

Responsible Waste Disposal: Proper waste disposal can reduce illegal dumping. Pikitup offers free bulky waste collection, allowing residents to discard large items like old furniture. Additionally, those renting out back rooms can request extra waste bins for increased waste management.

By promoting responsible disposal habits and using available services, the community can work towards reducing illegal dumping and fostering a cleaner, healthier Lenasia.
