On April 27, 2025, Cycle Club Lenasia (CCL), in partnership with Lenz70, marked Freedom Day with an invigorating 70-kilometre cycling event that both began and ended at the Sasol Garage on Protea Avenue, Lenasia. This year’s ride held extra significance as it also honoured the 78th birthday of Ismail Essay, affectionately known as Uncle Bhai, the club’s esteemed senior member.
The event brought together a vibrant mix of cycling enthusiasts, including members from the Alchemy Cycle Club (West Rand) and Linden Social Cycles, creating a lively sense of community and shared purpose.
Moosa Patel, CCL Chairperson, expressed his enthusiasm: “In conjunction with the Lenz70 organising committee, we hosted a fantastic 70-kilometre ride today. We were thrilled with the turnout, with clubs from all over Johannesburg joining us.” He noted the crisp autumn weather, saying many riders arrived layered up but quickly warmed as the sun rose. “Autumn rides are among the best—chilly starts, warm finishes,” he added.
Highlighting the day’s memorable moments, Moosa praised a young cyclist who impressively completed the full distance, commending the encouragement they received from family and club members alike.
Representing the Alchemy Cycle Club, Shaun Swartz reflected on the importance of youth engagement in positive pursuits: “It’s crucial for young people to find something they enjoy. Staying active through cycling or any discipline can steer them away from negative influences.” He also emphasized the lifelong value of cycling for fitness and discipline.
The spotlight, however, belonged to Uncle Bhai. Sharing his story, he revealed that his cycling journey began a decade ago—at the age of 68—after winning a bicycle at an event. “I encouraged my friends and neighbours to join, and that’s how it started,” he said. Now 78, he remains active by cycling and playing golf twice a week, embodying the spirit of vitality and perseverance.
When asked about advice for younger generations, Uncle Bhai kept it simple: “Be good. Do good.” His life story proves that age is no barrier to activity and that movement nourishes both the body and mind. “One day, I want to tell my grandchildren about my adventures on the golf course and the cycling paths,” he said with a proud smile.
The event wrapped up with laughter, camaraderie, and shared stories, as participants celebrated not only freedom but also the enduring bonds of health, community, and sport. It was a day that reaffirmed the power of active living to build resilience and lasting friendships.
