The Cycle Club Lenasia (CCL), in collaboration with Lenz70, is thrilled to announce its 70km Freedom Day Ride set for Sunday, 27 April 2025. Cyclists will gather at 6:30 AM at the Sasol Garage on Protea Avenue, Extension 8, Lenasia, to kick off the event.
“Freedom Day holds significant meaning for us as it commemorates the first democratic elections in South Africa—an event that resonates deeply within our community,” said Ibraheem Laher, the social media manager for CCL. “As a community-based cycling club, this celebration reflects our roots here in Lenasia. Almost every member of our club has ties to this area, making this event especially significant.”
The ride is especially designed for experienced cyclists from registered cycling clubs, as the 70km distance may be challenging for novices. “We have plans to host future events geared towards beginner cyclists—so stay tuned for updates. Safety is our utmost priority, and we will be enforcing a strict *No Helmet, No Ride* policy,” Laher added.
Participants can look forward to a diverse group of cyclists, ranging in age from 13 to 77 years old, including CCL members and riders from various clubs across Johannesburg and surrounding areas.
“This is not a race; it is a social club ride aimed at fostering enjoyment and camaraderie among participants. There will be no awards given,” emphasized Laher, reinforcing the event's community spirit.
Founded in 2006, CCL has approximately 60 active members, attracting cycling enthusiasts from Lenasia and various suburbs in Johannesburg. While the primary focus is on road cycling, many members also enjoy gravel and mountain biking.
Beyond cycling, CCL is dedicated to social responsibility, supporting numerous charitable organizations in and around Lenasia over the years. Members frequently participate in notable cycling events throughout the country, including Ride Joburg, the Amashova Classic, the Cape Town Cycle Tour, and the Double Century.
“We are always eager to welcome new members to our community,” Laher concluded, inviting cycling enthusiasts to join their ranks in celebrating Freedom Day through this exceptional cycling event.
