Rietgat Police Seize Illegal Firearm and Arrest Suspect in Festive Season Crackdown

The South African Police Service in Tshwane has intensified its festive season operations, leading to a significant breakthrough in the Rietgat Policing Precinct. On Monday night, 22 December 2025, at approximately 22:00, members of the Crime Prevention Unit were conducting routine patrols and stop-and-search operations in Block R when they intercepted a suspect attempting to evade police presence.

Upon searching the individual, officers discovered a 9mm pistol concealed in the suspect’s trousers. The firearm was loaded with four rounds of ammunition, and its serial number had been deliberately filed off. The suspect failed to produce a valid licence and could not provide any reasonable explanation for being in possession of the weapon.

The suspect was immediately arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether the suspect and the recovered firearm are linked to other criminal activities. The weapon will undergo ballistic analysis as part of these inquiries.

Major-General Samuel Thine, the District Commissioner of Tshwane, praised the officers for their vigilance and dedication to public safety. He urged the community to continue working closely with the police by reporting criminal activities and assisting in efforts to remove illegal firearms from the streets.
