On Tuesday, 23 December 2025, the Johannesburg District in Soweto West implemented Operation Lungisa as part of its festive season safety campaign. The operation was designed to enhance public safety, prevent crime, and maintain law and order during a period of heightened activity.
The operation was commanded by Brigadier Tsotetsi, with Warrant Officer Thwala serving as the operational lead. Jabulani SAPS deployed a strong team supported by various stakeholders, including JMPD Bylaws officers, Crime Prevention Wardens, Community Policing Forum representatives, community patrollers, and a local councillor. Resources included multiple officers, members, and vehicles to ensure effective coverage and rapid response.
The collaborative effort extended to social crime prevention initiatives, with active engagement between Jabulani SAPS, the councillor, CPF, GTW, and community patrollers. Detectives were also involved in addressing serious cases, including several incidents of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, where suspects were identified and processed.
The operation achieved notable successes. Arrests were made for contact crimes, including an attempted carjacking where an unlicensed firearm was recovered. Drug-related offences were also addressed, with suspects apprehended for possession of substances such as nyaope and crystal meth. In addition, targeted searches were conducted at identified premises, although some yielded no results.
Proactive policing formed a key part of the strategy. Officers conducted stop-and-search operations, inspecting 24 vehicles and 71 individuals. High-risk areas were patrolled, including Jabulani Mall, Jabulani Hostel, Inhlazane and Merafe railway stations, and known carjacking hotspots. These measures were aimed at deterring criminal activity and reassuring the community through visible law enforcement presence.
Operation Lungisa reflects the commitment of SAPS and its partners to safeguarding communities during the festive season. Through coordinated planning, stakeholder engagement, and decisive action, the operation reinforced the importance of collaboration in creating a secure environment for residents and visitors alike.
