A shooting in Newclare, Johannesburg, has claimed a fourth life, with police now investigating four counts of murder and one count of attempted murder following the deadly incident on Saturday, 15 August 2026.
According to Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, Sophiatown police initially opened three murder and two attempted murder cases after a shooting was reported at approximately 9.34pm.
Police responded to the scene after receiving a complaint of a shooting. Upon arrival, community members directed officers to a flat where several people were reportedly injured.
Police entered the premises and found three victims, aged between 18 and 20, lying inside the flat. All three were declared deceased at the scene by paramedics.
Further investigations established that two additional victims, aged 18 and 23, had sustained gunshot wounds. They were transported to hospital for medical treatment.
In an update issued on Monday, 17 August, Captain Sibeko confirmed that one of the injured victims had since succumbed to their injuries and was certified deceased in hospital.
The death brings the number of fatalities to four, while the case involving the surviving injured victim has been amended to one count of attempted murder.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation. The suspects are still unknown and no arrests have been made.
Police are continuing with their investigation to establish the circumstances leading to the shooting and to identify those responsible.
