On 11 September The Klipspruit West Angels (KWA) hosted their 2^nd annual Miss Klipspruit pageant in Klipspruit West.

The event was graced by girls from 2-years-old to 20-years-old.  The event is to assist girl be motivated and encourage them they are capable of doing anything and they should never give up on their dreams and help them gain self- confidence..

 

“I start Klipspruit West Angels in 2019  and the reason is I saw that  young girls  in the community  that have potential. So I asked myself why can’t I help make a difference in these girls life’s. That is when  I started with morjotte drummies girls, netball and modelling. For me it is truly about inspiring this generation of children and to take care of them through guidance and sharing knowledge,” said the founder Pamela Ferreira.

220 kids fed 1/4 soya bunnies

A sunny Saturday afternoon, 23 October at the Ubuhle Bomusa Foundation had 220 children eagerly waiting on the side of the road outside the foundation on Legwale Street, Naledi to receive a tasty 1/4 bunny chow filled with soya mince cooked by the foundation’s ladies and a cool cup of juice with a Stumbo Lollipop.

 

All excited the children stoodd in the queue waiting to reach the table to receive their food and a of cup of juice. This time the foundation did it differently, they had walk-ins of children from underprivileged backgrounds.

 

Approximately 45 loafs of bread to the elderly. 

100 loafs of bread was donated by Safeeyah Moosa of Spiritual Chords Foundation, Stumbo lollipops donated by Broadway Sweets and 8kgs soya mince by my mum and myself.

 

The day was dedicated to my late gran Pani Rowji who would have celebrated her 88^th birthday on 20 October.

GG, LIPF & GAF reachout to teenage girls

 It is never a dull day when Girl Gang (GG) ,Lady in Pink Foundation (LIPF) and God’s Angels Foundation come together to have a blissful Menstruation day which took place on 23 October at the Devland Garden’s.

The team handed out 100 hygiene packs with sanitary towels, roll on, wash cloth and soap to girls in puberty and sometimes miss school as they do not have sanitary pads to help them protect themselves

 

“We served lunch and refreshments and spoke about staying clean, boys and daily struggles and  found out that many of these girls were being bullied cause of the way they looked and their skin colour,” said GG founder and Ms Glam SA 2021 Monique Badenhorst.

 

She added that they had  a small pageant to help girls with their self-confidence. They will be having a Bullying awareness talk in early January 2022. 

 

“We calling on the community to please support the Girl Gang foundation and Lady in Pink Foundation,” she ended

Protea South Vaccine drive a success

Community members eagerly waiting to either get their first jab or second under umbrellas due to the severe heat.

More than 850 people were vaccinated by the Department of Health on 13 and 14 November at the Protea South sports grounds where a mobile unit was setup. 

Residents made their way to the site to receive their jab. Some residents were receiving their first jab while others came in for their second jab. The age category for this past weekend was from the age of 12 and upwards. 

 

The vaccines that were available for the two days was Pfizer and Johnson and Johnson.

 

Speaking to Seitatole Millicent (Nokuthula) Dlamini of Protea South, who works at Community Organising Workers Group (COWG) and University of Johannesburg said: “The challenge the people had was that they did not have transport to reach a vaccination centre from Protea South. We spoke to the Department of Health (DOH) who agreed to bring the vaccination to Protea South. There is a demand in Protea South that we are currently in talk with DOH to have the mobile unit here daily for people to get vaccinated.” 

 

She explained further that people need to get vaccinated as we are approaching December holidays and many people will want to go home and they will not be able to go through the borders unless they vaccinated. She also said that many residents in the area do not have their proper documentations, however Dlamini and her team are working on making sure they are vaccinated.

 

The vaccinated residents who spoke to the media walked out excited and relieved they were vaccinated and thanked DOH for coming out to Protea South for their community.

Themba Mavi blessed with a new wheelchair and revamp home

Non-profit organisation (NPO), Kasi Hero Foundation (KHF) identified the need to help Themba Mavi, 65, from Protea Glen Ext 3 who has been living on his own for more than 15 years.

The NPO visited Mavi at his residents to assess the situation and discovered that he was in dire need of an electric wheelchair to assist him be mobile and his home needed to be rebuilt. They first gave him a manual wheelchair on Friday 12 November that would help him till they received the electrical wheelchair from an anonymous donor. 

 

Mavi has been in a wheelchair for almost three years due to short illness.  His legs were amputated.  The wheelchair he received from the hospital was slowly deteriorating which caused the padding to fall off and Mavi was improvising with plastic to keep it intact.

 

The handover of the new electrical wheelchair took place on Sunday, 14 November at 3:45pm at his place.

 

A sad situation which left the team in tears was the condition of his home which does not have any proper flooring, furniture, kitchen units or a stove, a bathroom, or a toilet with basic sanitation such a water and soon he will be blessed with a brand-new rebuilt home which the donor has provided the finances to rebuild the home of Mavi.

 

Speaking to Mavi he shared his joy with the media and KHF expressing how happy he is to have a new wheelchair. Mavi explained that he had first went to consult traditional healers, prophets, and members of ZCC who kept him alive. Though it was too late for him as his illness got worse before he saw a specialist doctor.

 

“In October or November 2018, my situation begun with me feeling heat under my feet. When I walked, I felt like I was walking on hot concrete. The traditional healers and others kept me alive, but not going to hospital in time was a mistake,” said Mavi. He advises people to first go see a doctor and if that does not work only then seek the help from a traditional healer.

He thanked the Kasi Hero Foundation who came to his rescue and identifying his needs.

Ms Glam SA won by former Eldos resident

Former resident of Eldorado Park, Monique Badenhorst was recently crowned the 2021 Ms Glam South Africa queen in Johannesburg. 

Speaking to the media she said: “I feel honoured and blessed to be the first ever Ms Glam South Africa title holder and  I entered the pageant cause it was about entrepreneurship and I always wanted to be one. I sell my own brand which is Girl Gang merchandise.”

 

She added that they teach young girls and women about entrepreneurs and  encouraging women empowerment include fight against Period Poverty by providing Girls with sanitary pads.  

 

“I sometimes struggle with time management. My day job, my foundation and queen duties such as attending events or radio interviews. Sometimes I have to attend two events in one day or cancel some,” she said.

Her inspiration is the current Mrs Johannesburg, Lesley-Rae Coetzer. She is real and the most caring woman that she knows. She has a caring heart for her community. She encouraged Monique when she was at her lowest. 

 

Badenhorst message to young people is to do what makes you happy rather then follow your talent. You could be a great singer and still be unhappy. Always remember that you are what God says you are and you can achieve anything.

 

“I would like to fight against Period Poverty. Sanitary pads should be free like condoms. Sex is a choice but menstruation is not. I would like to restore dignity and confidence without our children,” she ended

Mutton curry and bread donated in Eldos

 The Lady in Pink Foundation were blessed on Sunday, 25 July with 120 tubs of mutton curries and bread which was donated by The Voice of Justice Foundation. 120 young and young at heart were blessed with a hot meal that they don’t always get to eat.

Speaking to Yusuf Seedat, from the Voice of Justice he explained that the organisation started by a team of current and former university students who got together and said they aim towards making a change for South Africa. 

 

“We have to help various justice issues and uplift those around us. A lot of people don’t realize that prior to covid there has always been a pandemic called poverty and we felt if basically help elevate poverty it be uplifting ourselves and others,” Seedat explained. 

 

He further added that they reached out to people who assisted them with areas in need and a few were Eldorado Park and Soweto. They are a small foundation and aim to grow.

 

They donated tubs of mutton and bread as well to Soweto, Lawley, and Maraisburg.

 

Lady in Pink Ambassador Tasneem Morgan said: “Voice of Justice assisted in donating a plate to those who are in need as we know there are difficult times for everybody around the world and with the pandemic many people are struggling to make ends meet and we are really grateful that they reached to sponsor the food and give out to our community.”
