SAPS Dismisses Claims of NIU Raid in Richards Bay as Fake News

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has strongly refuted claims circulating on social media regarding a so-called raid by its National Intervention Unit (NIU) in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal, allegedly involving the discovery of R18 million in a safe.

In an official statement released on Thursday, SAPS confirmed that no such operation took place and cautioned the public against the spread of misinformation.

“There was no raid conducted by any of our units, particularly the National Intervention Unit, as falsely claimed in various online reports,” said SAPS national spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe. “We urge the public to refrain from sharing unverified information, especially on social media platforms, as it undermines public trust and creates unnecessary panic.”

Brigadier Mathe emphasised the importance of responsible digital engagement, stating that the dissemination of fake news not only misleads the public but also places a burden on police resources.

“We call on all individuals and media users to verify information through credible and official channels before distributing it further. The SAPS remains committed to transparency and will always communicate verified operational activities through appropriate platforms,” she added.

The SAPS continues to monitor social media activity and will take necessary action where false and damaging information is deliberately spread.
